But even last night, against a poor side, he was afraid to take responsibility. Watch as the ball comes to him, he isn't thinking about what he can do with it to improve the play, he nearly always plays a quick pass back to whoever gives him the ball and more often than not isn't moving into space to take a return pass. I can't see Rodgers liking that, its the equivalent of hiding for me. Shelvey on the other hand looks to be really delivering on his promise from last year. Constantly getting his head up and his option taking is improving all the time. He changed the game last night.

Both Shelvey goals came from his passing!

Yet again Enrique was bloody awful so it looks like goalkeeper (if Pepe carries on as he is) leftback' date=' holding midfielder and 1 or 2 centre forwards are needed to be added to the thread bare squad in January. Hmmm what are the chances of this being put in to practice?[/quote']

2 goalies including Jones who is crap I reckon.

Where is Doni?

Promising game as our best players in the match are all very young. When BR put Shelvey on I said: "Good move, we need an experienced midfielder to sort this out!"

Shelvey experienced? Of course not, but that's the way it felt at the moment. Really underlines how remarkably unexperienced the team selection was.

Future doesn't look so bad after all.

Not really getting the Henderson love in from last night.

If anything its only reinforced my opinion of him, and i'm trying to give him the benefit of the doubt for a while now. Now, he was far from the worst player on the park. At least 3 of the back 5 take that gong.

Are you for real? Some people are never pleased, we must have been watching two different games. Henderson was arguably the best player on the pitch. Had an awesome 2nd half. He was demanding the ball at times and I would bet he was at the top for most touches, top passing, kept posession, got forward, won balls back and closed down players, got forward and ended with two assists. Great game all round.

I am a little bemused by the negativity of some after this result.

This was only Rodger’s third ever European tie, this is his first campaign. An away European victory in which we score five goals is good by anyone’s measure.

Progressing in the EL is far more important to the development of Rodgers and the team than our result on Sunday.

Logic behind this, xerxes?

For all its tribal intensity ( and it remains my favourite club fixture as a fan) it’s just three points. We could beat them, lose against Reading- and it’s a net three points ( or vice versa).

Rodgers has never managed in Europe. Some of our players have never played in Europe. All of us have CL ambitions. Learning from an extended EL run is vital to Rodger’s and the team’s experience for future ( hopefully) European campaigns.

Furthermore, for our star players, EL exposure is good for their careers, and personal image rights and commercial earnings. For Borini ( for instance), there is little value in being seen in the highlights of a Liverpool v Viila game outside of the title chasing pack. Televised Euro ties generate profile, status, and personal income. Without it our hold on our better players will diminish which further depletes our ability to compete domestically against the likes of Man U.

Do you agree? It's just my view.

I see what you are saying in talking about the Utd game in isolation.

For me, it's the league first and the cup comps second. Without a decent league finish, we won't competing in the EL next season anyway, let alone the CL. The way to get this club back on track is to finish further up the league. In my view, anyway.

No it isn't. Young Boys are a shit team, and it's a shit competition. Ask any liverpool fan which game they consider more important, and which they want to wn more, and there will only be one answer, which will also be reflected in the team selected

Can't say I agree. Even using your logic everyone is better off if we are in the CL, which demands a good finish in the EPL.

I'll take 3pts on Sunday and another 3 against Reading (whenever we play them) thank you very much

Europa can be used to blood the kids particularly as they seem good enough to give us a decent run.

Rubbish.

Why Sunday's game is so insignificant, I'm not even going to bother watching it.

I've been banging on about bringing more youth through since i joined this forum.

So on that basis i'm quite happy with the events of last night.

How Kenny managed to go through his second spell and not give Sterling a proper chance is quite beyond me.

What the hell was he seeing in training?

Rodgers is essentially managing two teams this season as long as we stay in the EL.

There are some really encouraging signs.

To see Shelvey come on as a 20 yr old and have that impact so quickly is very encouraging.

Yes Young Boys are shit, but we've specialised in making shit look good in recent years.

If i was Enrique Downing or Carragher i'd not be expecting to be figuring much this season. Which is just as it should be.

Im quietly hopeful we are going in the right direction at last.

Even Henderson looked ok and got involved.
