Stevie, Luis, Agger, Skrtel, Glen, Allen, Kelly and Pepe all left home

BRENDAN RODGERS will leave a host of senior stars behind when Liverpool FC travel to Switzerland today for tomorrow night’s Europa League Group A clash with Young Boys.

Skipper Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez, Glen Johnson, Martin Skrtel, Daniel Agger, Joe Allen and Martin Kelly will all be rested ahead of Sunday’s Premier League showdown with Manchester United at Anfield.

Pepe Reina, who is only one game short of equalling Ray Clemence’s club record of 80 appearances by a Liverpool goalkeeper in Europe, will also remain at Melwood.

Brad Jones is set to start in goal against Young Boys with Peter Gulacsi providing cover on the bench.

Rodgers will take a youthful squad to Switzerland including Samed Yesil, Suso, Andre Wisdom, Conor Coady, Adam Morgan, Jon Flanagan, Jack Robinson and Dani Pacheco.

The manager wants to avoid a repeat of what happened after the play-off round second leg with Hearts last month.

He fielded a strong line-up against the Scots at Anfield but the Reds paid the price for their exertions three days later when they were soundly beaten by Arsenal.

With Rodgers desperate to ensure Liverpool are firing on all cylinders for the visit of United, he has taken the decision to make wholesale changes for their Group A opener.

Oussama Assaidi will make his Liverpool debut a month after he was snapped up from Heerenveen for £3million.

The Morocco international, who has overcome a minor knock, wasn’t eligible to face Hearts having appeared for the Dutch club in the third qualifying round.

However, Assaidi is now free to play for the Reds in Europe and is likely to start on the left wing.

Despite the emphasis on youth, there will still be plenty of experience in the team which faces Young Boys at the Stade de Suisse.

Nuri Sahin is expected to start his second game for the Reds following his loan move from Real Madrid.

The Turkey international midfielder, who was an unused substitute at Sunderland last weekend, needs to build up his match fitness and will be hoping to stake a claim for Sunday’s game against United.

Jamie Carragher, who will skipper the Reds, is set to partner Sebastian Coates at the back with Jose Enrique, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing also involved.

Raheem Sterling will travel to Switzerland but may only play a cameo role ahead of Sunday’s game with United

No surprise the cups aren't being taken seriously this year. No point really, Rodgers could lose his job with a domestic double after all.

I'd love to win this!

But I do think it is mainly about negotiating your way through the group, the kids have to play as a necessity rather than choice.

Pacheco deffo starting so I hear, although this comes from the same person who claimed he was deffo leaving so take that with a small portion of sodium chloride.

Big opportunity for him, if he has any chance of salvaging a career here its going to be games like tomorrow night.

We really did a number on our squad in the summer. Remarkable.

We're certainly thin on quality.

We're going to be turning out a virtual yoof team tomorrow. Thanks very much, Mr Henry, very well done. Not!

I've no doubt the boys picked to play will do their best but what ever way you cut it, we are short of quality attacking options up front.

Think we'll do well with a draw.

It's funny init, when previous managers have played the likes of Voronin and Degen in the early stages of Europe and Carling cups people went mental about giving the kids a chance.

Now it looks like we're going to line up with 5 full internationals + Enrique and some promising kids and people are complaining about the lack of depth in the squad.

Which one do you want?
