The Times:

Liverpool will not face any action from the Premier League for allegedly tapping up Virgil van Dijk.

Southampton made an official complaint to the Premier League this month after being angered by widespread reports that the Dutchman wanted to move to Anfield to work with Jürgen Klopp. After a preliminary investigation, however, the League has concluded that there is insufficient evidence to start disciplinary proceedings. Premier League lawyers have spoken to both clubs and are satisfied that the correct procedures have been followed.

Southampton have not withdrawn their complaint, but accepted an apology from Liverpool three weeks ago and will not push for them to be charged. The Premier League will not take any action unless new information becomes available, which, given that Southampton submitted all the evidence at their disposal with their initial complaint, appears unlikely. Premier League lawyers have spoken to both clubs and are satisfied that the correct procedures have been followed.

Liverpool will be relieved to escape without being charged, particularly as they were sanctioned this year by the Premier League for tapping up an academy player at Stoke City and offering his family inducements. In that instance the club were fined £100,000 and banned from signing academy players for 12 months, and although a fine was the most likely outcome if they had been found guilty in the Van Dijk case, the Premier League has the power to impose transfer bans on repeat offenders.

Liverpool have not denied making an illegal approach to Van Dijk, but their punishment will be restricted to the humiliation of being forced to make a very public climbdown and the probable loss of a key transfer target. Klopp still wants to sign Van Dijk, but has been told by his employers that another move for the 25-year-old is unrealistic and so is prioritising other targets such as RB Leipzig’s Naby Keita. During the talks between the two clubs before the apology, Southampton made it clear that they would not sell Van Dijk to Liverpool at any price. In addition, Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool’s owner, values its reputation for probity and does not want to be seen to be going back on its word.

Southampton are hopeful that Van Dijk will stay, but Chelsea and Manchester City are also interested in him.

Again, I don't think the club's constant leaking of information can be separated from the selling clubs' justified position of playing hardball. Didn't a few journalists - completely coincidentally of course - state a few weeks back that the club intended breaking all records in terms of transfer outgoings this summer? How did they expect that one to play out when they sat down with other clubs to negotiate?

Thats a conclusion anyone could have drawn given the prices being quoted for the targets being mentioned.

If our 3 main targets were Salah, Van Dijk and Keita, you have Leipzig saying there players (be it Forsberg, Keita or anyone else) aren't for sale and Southampton saying earlier in the season that they're now in a position where they don't have to sell, coupled with everything else going on in the transfer window that gives you an indication of which way the market is heading then it doesn't take a genius to come to that conclusion.

Thats before you filter whats actually said through the need to generate clicks where a 'yes we're interested in player X' becomes a You'll never guess which superstar is heading to anfield, click here to find out' headline.

I'm not sure any conversation took place where the club specifically said 'write a story about how we're going to spend millions and break transfer records' because it serves no purpose.

No they haven't.

Where did the first price come from in each situation?

The fucking club telling journos we're after X player and this much will get them.

Keita was being quoted as 30 million in May.

Van Dijk 40 million in December, now, he must have been fucking impressive on that treatment table to jump 30 million quid while injured.

Who quoted £30m?

Because it sure as fuck wasn't RBL, so the price hasn't jumped at all.

Who's quoting 50 and 80?

Have Leipzig specifically come out and given actual quotes on the price?

If not how are you judging which 'sources close to the club' stories are credible or not or are you purely judging it on what fits your need?

Probity Cup Winners - 2017

When we sign the Ox, he'll throw a box of his Emirates Cup medals on the dressing room table and say that anybody who thinks they deserve one should take one, but not to get complacent ahead of next season.

Jesus, that's a depressing thought, he'd be the player with the most medals in this squad.

My point you, I'm assuming deliberately avoided is the first 'valuation' or price given is what FSG feed the press.

LFC after Luis Suarez for £12m

Who the fuck you think put that valuation out there?

Given the first links to Keita involved Arsenal (edit for clarity: Arsenal and us) and the Van Dijk links referenced Southampton and Puel i'll go with not us?

Even if the initial price hikes didn't exist you're still looking at an increase of 50 million on the two, you can do alot with 50 million.

That report is full of contradictions. They say lawyers are satisfied correct procedures where followed, that LFC tapped up the player but there was insufficient evidence. How the fuck does that scenario work out then?

Either the correct procedures were followed so we didnt tap up the player or there's insufficient evidence so how could correct procedures be followed?

It's the FA they don't need to justify themselves, whatever they say is how it is.

The moral of this story simply appears to boil down to not trying to be clever by briefing the press to try and lower a transfer fee. Had we kept our gobs shut we'd have avoided making an unnecessary public apology and possibly even signed him

The tapping up allegation has always been bollocks, it goes on everywhere. It's reported all the time that managers have met with other teams players yet we're the ones who appear to be in the wrong for doing it. Just doesn't stack up for me.

Push the boat out and sign VVD and Keita. Do everything we can to get those deals done, even if it means paying 140M pounds. It's absolute robbery, but the spine of the team is strengthened enormously with two leaders who can be here for years to come and help us compete at the top level.

Add the Salah and Solanke fees and we've spent about 180M pounds. Hopefully we've enough for a left back, but if not, so be it. But let's say we spend 200M.

What will we bring back in sales? Arguably half of that, depending on who goes. Easily 70M of it, and that's without losing anyone we don't expect to lose.

This is the summer we see what we're made of. Klopp delivered top four with a thin squad. The only way the penny pinching of recent windows is acceptable is if we have been saving our money up for such a time as this, when, if we splurge big on the right players, we can have a paradigm shift and look to compete at the top level, rather than trying to hang onto the coat tails of the best teams year in year out.

Come on Liverpool! Let's add to the good business so far with two top players through the spine of the team.

How can we 'escape punishment' (media shite) for allegedly tapping up a player, when there is insufficient evidence that we tapped him up?

Surely we could only escape punishment if there was sufficient evidence and they decided not to punish us for it.

Having put a statement out on our own website shows that we clearly did tap the player up. We  apologised and backed off from the club and player and if any half assed kangaroo court was set up could find us guilty very quickly.

At least nothing is going to happen now they've decided not to look into it but it leaves us unlikely to sign one of Klopp's first choice players.

It's balancing the pay whatever even though it's robbery with setting the tone for any future transfer.

Neither player is a once in a generation type player and I refuse to accept you can't get similar, if not the same, quality for far less.
