It would be one thing if he were talking like that to his senior pros, but with all the hype around Shaw at such a young age I wouldn't be at all surprised if it started to go to his head and he stopped putting in the effort required in training.  The quickest way to fix that with a young player is to publicly take him down a notch or two.  If Shaw is what they think he is he'll respond by taking his medicine and redoubling his efforts.  If he's to be the left back version of Joe Cole then he'll grit his teeth, work a bit harder while van Gaal is watching and start to build up resentment.

No I agree with you.  Slur at his peak would have had this kid under the cosh from the word go. I had a boss many years back who was an absolute cunt . Nothing got past him and if he thought anyone was taking the piss he was down on them like a ton of shite. That said if you performed he was fair . Everyone hated him but when he retired he confided in me and said "you don't have to be popular to be a good manager" and to fair with the group of people he managed it worked .
