    Summer 2021 transfer thread.

Hmm. I would actually say Leicester, Brighton, Brentford, and the RB clubs off the top of my head. I'm sure there are more. There are a bunch more who are trying to be that kind of owner, but just not doing a great job of it. Like, they start to build a recruitment department, but then they don't listen to them and end up doing whatever their manager or his agent want instead, so it never really pans out.

Yes, I think this is exactly it. I think the long-term plan was to cash in on one of the front 3 this summer and go for a big-money signing to replace him. Jota came last summer, then it would have been Salah out and Sancho in, for example, this summer, and then you could replace Firmino next summer. However, COVID has destroyed all those plans. Our finances are much tighter than we would have budgeted for 2 years ago when all the groundwork was laid for all of this, and more importantly so are Real's and Barca's (the two teams we would have been counting on to give us £120m for Salah). No idea how Edwards is going to figure out a way out of this problem. It won't be easy, that's for sure. On the one hand, you have Chelsea, United and City spending huge, and instead of us being able to do the same with the Salah money, we are pinching pennies after a £40m loss last season. What I don't understand is how fans think that we are supposed to solve this problem. They all say "spend some money!" as if it were that simple. Liverpool don't have much money! If FSG all dip into their pockets and give them some the way Chelsea/City's owners have, then sure, they'd have some, but they don't operate that way. They never have, and if they did, we'd be another billionaire's plaything destroying the football ecosystem in the way those clubs are and no better than them!

I mean, you could, I guess? But then you can't say "it's a mid-table budget" or whatever. If Brighton spend 70% of their turnover on wages, and Liverpool do the same, that doesn't meant that Klopp is having to operate on "a mid-table budget." It means he's operating on the budget of the 2nd- or 3rd-largest turnover in the league, which is what we have.

Our budget, as measured by our wage bill (which is a FAR more important figure than the FM-driven obsession with transfer fees), was £326m last season.. Brighton - £103m Villa - £109m Leicester - £157m Spurs - £181m So no, I think it's pretty clear that "his budget has been mid-table" is not correct.

Ugh, this argument is SO tiresome. It always comes down to this: there are two types of successful owners. One, those who spend ill-gotten gains (oil money, usually) on buying up all the best players in the world. We all agree that these are unfair and against the spirit of the game, but it is what it is. Two, those who work to develop the club's commercial power and then spend what the club makes. Maybe invest a bit more than that as the club appreciates, but mostly just work to develop good systems to buy better than your opponents do and reap the rewards. Then, of course, there's a bunch of mediocre and bad owners who are on a spectrum from Hicks & Gillett (make as much money as the club can give me, don't care about the wins/losses) to sort of OK, but we won't discuss these as no one would want an owner like them. We have this argument over and over. "Why don't FSG spend more?" but at the same time, the exact people who say that are also posting "it's a shame what Dubai is doing over at City, ruining the game and FFP with their billions they've made off oppressing slaves." FSG are literally probably the best owners in the second category in the world. They've hired the best manager in the world, built the best recruitment department in the world, and we're actually managing to compete with City and United despite having a much smaller budget. I would suggest that if you would prefer owners in the first category who will sugar-daddy the club to trophies galore, that you don't understand the club at all, but honestly, I'm tired of it. Anyone is welcome to their opinion, but we have what we have, and that's why a pandemic affects our ability to spend more than it does for City or Chelsea or PSG.

    *Shakes head* Everton again.

Winks is one of the only players in the Premier League who isn't good enough for Everton! Genuine Championship-level player. I rather hope Spurs keep him; it would increase the odds that they sell Ndombele, who is actually good, and continue to play him, thus ensuring they will be nowhere near challenging us next season.

I had an open mind about Bowen. "Maybe Michael Edwards has seen something I haven't," I thought. Then I watched this video, which seems to have been put together by someone who hates Jarrod Bowen and wants to make him look as terrible as possible, while pretending that the video features his "highlights." Got as far at 2 or 3 minutes in, it's mostly just him being fouled or putting in a hopeful cross. Yikes.

Thoughts and prayers with them after the Townsend news. I'm still absolutely amazed that there are clubs out there with all the money and data and scouts, and the best that they can recommend for a bit of cheapish depth is the guy who shoots from 40 yards every time he gets the ball. You'd almost certainly be better off just playing some random Championship-level player from their youth team.

    Alisson Becker

We should probably wait with Van Dijk to see how he returns from his injury. Fingers crossed it'll all be OK but then you remember how Oxlade-Chamberlain's never been the same since he had ligament damage and you can see why the club might hold off on that one for a few months.

    Sick of being Fat

Booze is a real killer in the calorie count, for sure. Like I said, just the simple act of recording everything I ate/drank made me realise how many empty calories I was drinking. You start to enter it in and you start thinking "do I want a kebab and a diet coke or a salad and a pint?" and for me, I always prefer the former.

    How does your garden grow?

Never understood why people grow potatoes in their gardens. Is it kind of a "prepper" mentality, like just in case everything falls apart? Or is it a foodie thing, of wanting to only eat local? I always grow things that are expensive or difficult to find in the shops, or things that taste significantly better if I cut them fresh and eat right away (like herbs). Potatoes cost virtually nothing down at the local Asda, no?

    Sick of being Fat

About 5 months ago I spoke at a conference and was watching the video back afterwards and said "this is getting to be a problem." Don't know why it changed everything, but it did. Basically, I never really cared that I was fat, or I did, but only a little, not enough to actually do anything about it. But watching that video put me over the edge. So I went searching the internet, found a calorie counter, and plugged in the numbers. I'm really tall, so fortunately that works in my favour. I said that my goal is 110 kg (I had gotten almost to 140 kg at 6'4") - I'm not looking to be thin, or even fit, just not obese, basically. Doctor suggested losing 2 kg/month as a sustainable target, so when I put that into the machine, it says I can eat the amazing total of 2500 kcal/day! I somehow had been eating around 3200 kcal/day before! Blew my mind how easy it is. Just eat a small breakfast and lunch each day and get home from work with around 900 kcal or so, and I can basically eat anything I want for tea (1600 kcal is a lot of food!). Down 10 kg so far, about 20 kg left to go, but most importantly, it feels totally sustainable. The very act of recording everything I eat has made me realise I was eating SO much wasted calories before, and all I really have to do is cut out the Coke and sweet snacks, eat a piece of fruit twice a day and a vegetable with every meal and I'm set.

    *Shakes head* Everton again.

None of these were anywhere near the most expensive player we'd ever signed, though. 35m in that market is like 90m today. If you signed a striker today for 90m and he went on to score 6 goals for the club, it's a total disaster, it doesn't matter that one of those goals helped us win a semi-final. Even Di Maria and Pepe, the worst signings of the last few years in the league, had better records than that. Konchesky was a worse player than Carroll, sure, but he cost us peanuts. There's no comparison - Carroll is easily the worst signing in our history. The only ones who even come close are Benteke and Acquilani, and maybe Downing.

Some West Ham blert on twitter has posted a tweet about Soucek being better than Fabinho, which then prompted a discussion on "all time worst shouts" which then led me down a rabbit trail trying to find that old GOT thread about how Jelavic is better than Suarez. Behold, the Blues from Sept 2012: This one really makes me laugh, seeing as how he immediately dropped off the face of the earth afterwards and never had a purple patch like that again:

I hesitate to speak against Michael Edwards, because if he's seen something in Niguez's numbers that warrants a pursuit I'd say we should get him, but there's something suspicious going on with him. First of all, the 9-year deal was insane. Atletico can pretend they want to hold out all they want, but I suspect they're secretly desperate to sell him. He hasn't been performing well for over a season now, and they have 5 years left on that deal. Maybe the problem gets fixed by a change in scenery and a new tactical setup, but with Simeone locked down for the long term now he's not going to get that there and they pretty much have to sell him to someone, one would think? And he's not going to accept a move just anywhere - if we walk away, you'd have to think it's a short list of other potential suitors. I suspect in the end Atletico either try to see if he can get his mojo back for one more year or we end up getting him for a bargain price. There are times when the selling club has all the leverage but not in this case. That contract looks like a huge albatross for their club if he doesn't find his form again.

Anybody else fucking despise international football?

I just want to say that I completely stand by my hatred of international football, and that goes for big tournaments (where at least the games matter, whereas most of the hatred comes from the pointless friendlies they're always taking our players off to and breaking them) as well. Don't care if England hang on to win this thing in the second half, it's still dreadful. Seen way too many takes on the internet the past week or so about what a great tournament this has been. Sorry, they're all wrong - it's shite, just like international football always is. Harumph.

Just can't wait for this to be over and done with, don't care who wins. Just don't get Henderson injured and then we can get back to real football in a few weeks.

    Summer 2021 transfer thread.

Bit odd that we haven't been linked to more Ligue Un players, honestly. When the news of the TV deal collapse first came out I predicted a huge exodus - there have been some sales but not as many as I expected. Maybe no one has any money (except City, Chelsea, and PSG, of course)? I will say one thing, if United actually do end up getting both Camavinga and Sancho this summer that would be really disappointing. I'm so used to their huge financial advantage not meaning anything because they just blow it all on overpriced aging has-beens, that it would be crushing to wake up and find out that they're now going to start spending their money on potential superstars. Also, what is going on with Aouar? If you'd told me two months ago we were paying 40m for him to replace Gini I'd have said "sound." Now he's available for 20m and there are no takers? Can that really be true?

Transgender stuff - what's going on?

That thread is really interesting, actually. This line, in particular, must have been extremely inflammatory at the time (and now) but IMO is still a good summary of the heart of the issue: I think all of us must sympathise with people who struggle with gender dysphoria. It must be absolutely maddening, and my heart breaks for them. But the solution to someone whose conception of reality doesn't correspond with actual reality cannot possibly be to fully accommodate them and pretend that the problem is reality itself.

    Summer 2021 transfer thread.

Just reading that Barca have to come up with 200 million euro to register the new players they've already signed this summer, and it's got me thinking ... Why not replace Gini with another Dutch midfielder? Frenkie hasn't impressed everyone there since he came (although this season he was better) and he's the perfect age to fill the hole Gini's departure has left in the squad. Come on, FSG, cough up a little money - you know it makes sense! He might cost 60m now but he'll be worth 120m after a couple of seasons dominating the midfield for Jurgen!

Yes, always felt he was a clear step ahead of Kelleher when I've watched both of them. I really thought Grabara might turn out to be special. Maybe he doesn't train well? Or there was something going on behind the scenes? Either way, I won't be surprised if he moves to a top league at some point in the next 2-3 years.
