what was stopping them, the proceeding 20 odd years?

A convenient way to delude one’s self into automatically discounting any success achieved by your neighbours and rivals. It’s a delusion that helps them cope and to sleep. If they can just keep the faith and believe, they’ll be OK. But deep down, they know it’s not true. Sad really

They weren't even the best team in their own city the year after.

This myth that their side was broken up by the ban is one that they constantly peddle.  The ones that were sold were Gray, Mountfield and Richardson. Gray was about 33 and moved to Villa, Mountfield left to go to Villa about 3 years after Gray and Richardson went to Watford. So how did the European ban affect them when they moved to other mid table English teams, who were coincidentally banned from Europe?.

They stayed together to win the league in 1987 after they doubled their money after one season on Gary Lineker. They wasted that money on average players.

The only player of that era who went abroad was Adrian Heath who had a brief spell with those European giants Espanyol. The majority of the 1985 team played against Liverpool in the 1989 FA Cup Final.

Listening to Evertonians, and my uncle has banged on about this for years, you would think that they were the 1991 Red Star Belgrade team who were picked apart by top Italian and Spanish clubs.

They also had roughly the same amount of money Liverpool did around that time as both of us sold our star strikers for big money but we reinvested it better.

The only big club they have ever beaten in Europe was Bayern Munich that one time. They're basically Norwich City, but with spawnier cup draws.

And you’ve got to ask them just how bad that Bayern team was to be playing in that cup.

They've played AC Milan and Inter once but years ago. Lost to Monchengladbach on pens in the early 70s. Never played Barca, Real, Atletico Juventus, Ajax, Roma, Celtic, Feyenoord.

If you look at at their route to the 1985 final they played the equivalent of Europa Conference league sides apart from Bayern.

I actually went to the Bayern game, I was 25, it would have cheered me up greatly walking out if I had known that I would reach the venerable age of 62 with Everton not getting anywhere near the heights of that night and the final.

Their mid-80s team was broken up not because of a lack of European football. It was broken up by buying bad players to replace championship winning ones. That's it. There is no more to the story.

They -

Replaced Stevens with McDonald,

Replaced Mountfield with Watson,

Replaced Steven with Nevin,

Replaced Bracewell with Snodin,

Replaced Sheedy with Wilson,

Replaced Gray with Lineker, who they replaced with Wayne Clarke.

Fuck them. A tiny bit of self-reflection would make them a lot more sane.

Watson and Nevin were decent enough but the others were average at best. And Lineker simply didnt want to stay or Everton wanted to cash in (as is what they do.)

I think Bayern won the Bundesliga that year. Everton's route to (what they believe would have been their inevitable) victory in 1986 would have seen them face Enzo Sciffo's Anderlecht, a revenge-hungry Bayern, the real-life eventual winners Steaua and Barcelona.
