Why have the Echo always got to engage in this hyperbolic nonsene, by waxing lyrical to a ridiculous extent about a signing, a manager, the new owners, the new stadium and so on.

People say there are some knee jerkers on the internet forums, but they take the biscuit. I remember Garcia was the new Dalglish after his first game at Anfield too. They do the player no favours with this type of exagerrated shite.

I remember that.

Personally, I think the Internet and 24 hour sports TV have eroded proper analysis. Everything has to be judged and labelled instantly now, always in a subjective manner.

People were waxing lyrical about Josemi after his first friendly apperance, while Reina was our worst keeper in years around this time last year.

It's the first time I've bothered to read one of your posts and I think you are a cunt.

Completely agree with that Senor Rojo (I suppose its heavily ironic given we are on a discussion forum). And every stat has to count in this age of 24/7 sports coverage, which means talk of winning the league/relegation/sacking managers/players form happens in August ferchristsakes.

I remember when league tables weren't even published until end of September.

I used to make my own.

After breaking the club’s transfer record to sign the striker, he repays the club in kind, by turning in an effort at the Anfield Road end – and a new star is born.

The year was 1977 and the player was Kenny Dalglish.

that was almost 30 years ago to the day, spooky

I seem to remember his first competitive goal was away at Boro.

What an amazing team that was. Just looking at those names brings back memories as a 9 year old enjoying Liverpool's first European cup final victory.

Same old same old, can't beat Boro on the first day of the season, we'll not win anything. And playing 4-5-1 as well by the looks of it. You've got to attack against the dross. Sack Paisley.

Dalglish hails king Torres

By COLIN WOOD Last updated at 20:55pm on 24th August 2007

Rafa Benitez has warned Liverpool fans to keep their feet on the ground about Fernando Torres after his £20million club record buy was compared with legend Kenny Dalglish.

Some supporters are already mentioning the 23-year-old Torres in the same breath as King Kenny, but Benitez talked down comparisons with the man voted Liverpool's best player ever.

He said: 'If Fernando can play at the same level as Kenny Dalglish it will be amazing.'

Dalglish was in the home country of the new boy, watching on TV, when he made his big impression against Chelsea last Sunday.

He said: 'I was off my seat in Spain when he stood up to John Terry in the first half when Terry was screaming in his face. That's what you want to see from your players. He wasn't aggressive or annoyed.

'He just wanted to show Terry that he wasn't bothered by whatever he did — and the smile was the perfect retort.

'I enjoyed Torres' home debut and was delighted for him when he scored.

'It was a marvellous finish, all made possible by the ball he received from his skipper.'

Liverpool will be looking for their 7,000th League goal at the Stadium of Light today but they may be without their captain Steven Gerrard, who has a broken toe.
