People travelling with fake or stolen passports is a lot more common then you'd think. London airports would stop 20 or more people a week. No doubt a few more get through. It's usually people trafficking.

Quite.  I don't see how the airline can say all security checks were made when two guys with stolen passports are on board.  Do security checks not include making sure people don't have the wrong passports?  Can someone in the industry, such as JohnnyH, clarify this for a non-airy layman like me?

The checks are all done, but a handling agent or airline can only look for obvious forgeries as the staff don't have the equipment or training to spot the good ones. For each person that gets through on a fake, stolen, or even an out if date passport, it's a £2000 fine per person to the airline so it's in their interests to spot them. But excellent forgeries or lookalikes are a lot harder to spot. Passport control at an airport will spot 99% of them. But the 1% will get through. Human trafficking is regular.
