I can't see how we benefit from renewing Matip.

He'll be 33 with a really ropey injury history and fresh off a really serious injury and very long absence - sort of injury it would be no surprise at all if he was never same after at this stage of his career especially.

The benefit is that Klopp seems to want to, really.

I guess you can argue intangibles and that, again, if Quansah is the real deal, he can't be anything lower than 3rd choice because you have to keep giving him adequate opportunities. And in that scenario, it would be far easier for the club to renew him than to buy someone else to play that more limited role in the squad.

As we have seen season after season our 5th choice centre half gets plenty of games let alone our 3rd - and one of our centre half options is probably our best cover at RB - and some may argue our best RB.

For me we need better/more reliable than a 33 year old with a really ropey injury history coming off the back of a long absence with a serious injury as one of our options.

I honestly don't think that even with the rise of Quansah and the seemingly high ceiling he may have that we should be sitting on our hands when it comes to the situation at centre half. We didn't have a recognised centre half on the bench today for example - OK we had one at LB who we could have moved into the middle but still. There is of course no way of knowing now of course but i think Matip is done sadly and I don't think we should be renewing his deal.

We'll see though!

The vast, vast majority will be for buying, as always. There's no point arguing the opposite view most of the time. It's about what the club does, though, and this Quansah emergence is the type of thing that can change plans.

Klopp giving Matip another contract? Hasn't he learnt his lesson yet?

He said he expected the club to act with class, no one knows whether that just means a short contract extension until he gets fit and can find another club, or a new longer term deal.

I reckon we offer him a 12 month deal and it's up to him if he wants something more long term. Realistically anyone we bring in will be 3/4 choice and not many top young players will want that. He will want to give Quansah game time and Gomez needs minutes as we need them for the squad as they are home grown and we have a issue there. If Matip goes I think it'll be a young player who knows they are a year or two away. Don't see the issue with a year offer personally.

The squad overall looks in a good place. And even if people don't like it they won't want so many players in the likes of Clark Doak,Bradley etc don't have a path to the team. Morton another who's playing really well for Hull this season

I see the sense in a short contract extension for Matip from a point of squad balance and harmony and to give Quansah another season to see how high the ceiling is with him but the danger of that is that at some point Matip has to play and he’s not very good at that anymore. I’d sooner sign a dm who can drop in like Fabinho did.

If we get a number 6, I'd like it to be a world class specialist. And I don't think we will sign one otherwise.

While I agree, I’m not sure how anyone can have an idea what we’ll do at number 6 after our exploits last transfer window.

The one time you could really tell our Director of Football was working from Ibiza.

If giving Matip a 1 year extension allowed us the funds to trigger Bruno Guimarães £100 release clause, I’d be more than happy.

The seemingly non-bullshitter I follow on Twitter (if there is such a thing) keeps banging the Rayan Aït-Nouri drum, although admits it’s more likely in the summer.

Apparently we also extensively scouting Warmed Omari and Leny Yoro - both young French centre backs from League 1.  Again, summer rather than now.

Haha, fair point. I just think klopp is happy with the options he has and he'll have said to whoever is doing transfers, he only wants a real game changer, as they like to put it, in that position. I think it's the easiest position in the team to upgrade, but I just don't think we'll try to.

You'd like to think if we really wanted to, we could do that anyway, especially if we are back in the CL. We have thiagos wages off the books this summer.

I think Guimaraes has really struggled along with his team this season. He's a cracking player, but I don't think he's looks exceptional this year.

Has he said anything since that initial remark? My take on that statement was around treatment and facilities rather than a contract. As much as Klopp is a legend of a human being, he isn't a charity and his employers are not going to basically gift Matip a weekly 6 figure wage when they know he isn't available to do what he's paid for.

I can’t comment massively, every time I’ve watched Newcastle he’s been comfortably their best player.

Genuinely think he’d be great for us.

He turns 27 in November, whether we’d pay that sort money is something different.

I'd expect us to give him a pure pay as you play type deal. So he has a contract and an opportunity when he recovers (and can continue his recovery with us if it goes beyond June), but there's no real impact on our wage bill.

The time to sign him really was when he went to Newcastle. We were linked at the time weren't we?

Jurgen and the Club were fortunate in the summer we could offload all the baggage of crocks and past its, who were a season or so overdue.

By all means help matip recover, but don't be relying on him due to age and injury. Go out and replace him because lets be honest theres only a small chance he will ever play for us again.

Guimares has been ordinary for them this season. I watched one of their matches a few weeks ago and he kept giving the ball away even when he wasn’t under pressure.

I thought he was also invisible against us when we played them on New Year’s Day.

He's a decent player but not worth that sort of fee when you look at who we have now. He'd have to be a VVD/Alisson type difference maker for that amount and he clearly isn't.
