I'd agree with that, but only just. Surfer Rosa was a fantastic album and to follow that up with Doolittle was amazing.

Cobain admitted on a number of occasions that without Surfer Rosa, Nirvana would probably not have existed and that 'Smells like teen Spirit" was his failed attempt at making a Pixies tune.

 

Their influence on the Music scene was unbelievably huge.

I slept for a while with a gorgeous Canadian girl who spoke and acted exactly like Kim Deal who was one of her heroes. It was the most fantastic shag ever for me. I used to walk her every day into a shady place. Then I'd buy her a soda and try to molest in the parking lot - yep, yep, yep. When we were apart she used to get her dress all wet and send it to me. When we boke up I missed her soup and I missed her bread. She missed my kisses and she missed my head. But she had found some guy with one divine hammer.

The documentary Loudquietloud is well worth a watch, it's about their reunion the other year, some of the stuff with Dave Lovering's really sad but that's made up for by Kim Deal being the fucking bomb.

One of the very few "rock" (for want of a better word) groups I still enjoy listening to. They fully rock out, have mental - and amusing - lyrics, understand the importance of melody and don't sound like anyone else. They were also brilliant live on each of the three occasions I saw them. A great, great band. I wish more groups with guitars sounded as fresh as they do instead of derivative and dull.

I love the Teach me. Everybody else says, "fucking ace, they rock the shit" and the Teach still manages to deliver a tribute that sounds like it was a critique of empirical methodology and should be delivered as a seminar paper.
