Okay, I'm developing a worrying tendency to drink a few beers and turn on some jazz. It started with a passing interest in "Favourite Things" by Coltrane, turned into a slight infatuation with Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew" and has now flourished into a fully-fledged obsession of all things Brad Mehldau.

 

This guy is incredible, Highway Rider is THE album of 2010 for me and on top of that I have found a 23 minute jazz cover of Black Hole Sun on Spotify.

I was raised on jazz, got it non-stop from my dad. Grew up to the sounds of Charlie Parker, Horace Silver, Oscar Peterson, Cannonball Adderley. I still get out to hear the stuff live a couple times a month, and play a little myself. There's few things that can really clear my head out and let me relax and just properly chill like a jazz group knocking out a groove in a small club.

 

Thing about jazz is, the term covers so many forms of... I don't know, musical expression, that there's an immense diversity of sound covered by that one word. Jazz is a lot of things, from hard...

 

 

to soft...

 

 

to just plain weird.
