Whelan was a terrific player. He was in the batch of players just after Souness, Kenny, Hansen, Barnes and Lawrenson that were absolutely pivotal to us.

He initially was a real fan favourite despite taking over from Ray Kennedy who was another phenomenal player and much loved. He was probably the best young player in Britain at that point. Then he had one or two poor seasons (by his standards and our standards at the time) and an element of the fans turned on them, especially when they saw Rushy coming on so much. They were the same element that turned on Stevie Nicol, Ian Rush and many other a top class player in the 60's, 70s and 80s at points in their career. Younger fans talk about some of the beauts that we have now, but believe me we had some spoiled pricks supporting us then who did fuck all for a young lad's confidence. However, by the time he was captain, he was a massive figure and with Steve McMahon by far the best partnership in English football.

  • 2 weeks later...

Fucking hell ... i know he isn't great but he is best we have in that position by a mile.

Once again our lack of depth is gonna kill us when a player gets injured.

Time for Grujic to step up in coming weeks?

I'd forgotten about Grujic. I would probably favour him over Can to be honest, but its all about balance and maybe Klopp feels Can offers that more?

Grujic will not play as the deepest midfielder. Lucas or Can if Hendo is out.

I'd rather have Wijnaldum as the deepest midfielder or bring Coutinho back into midfield than have Can in that position. He's too slow on the turn for it, and when he receives the ball from the defence, with his back to the opposition goal, he's an easy target to press.

Our nonexistent quality in terms of squad depth means we'll badly miss Henderson. Can hasn't been up to scratch this season and that leaves us with...absolutely fuck all as an alternative in central midfield.

He hasn't played that 6 role very often if at all.

Interesting to see if Klopp goes with him or Lucas.

Reckon it will be Lucas at centre back and can in midfield.
