Suarez grew into the role, he missed quite a few chances in his first season and developed into a natural goalscorer under Rodgers, to give him his due.

Alonso was a great player, he was an important component of that side but I wouldn't credit him in even the top three of players who helped us win the CL.

I think it had a lot to do with Rodgers. Playing under an attacking manager means you’re going to get more chances and if you’re a good player with potential then you’re going to get better at finishing because you’re getting put in that situation more and more. Mo’s finishing this season has improved for the same reason. He doesn’t seem to miss anymore.

Had Mo gone to United or Suarez to a Mourinho team when he was developing they wouldn’t be half the player. It’s why Mourinho nearly always signs and plays experienced proven goalscorers rather than developing players into that. His style of play restricts them and harms their development.

Mate, he scored 49 goals the season before he came to Liverpool. Of course he improved as a footballer as he got older, but the idea that he was a 'shit finisher' who couldn't 'hit a barn door' and then became a top finisher under Rodgers is just hideously false. He had plenty more chances under Ajax to get his 49 goals, and the 100+ goals he scored before he got to Liverpool. He was proven to be an excellent finisher when he came, which is what I was saying when other posters were saying how he couldn't finish.

But fuck it, I'm not going to waste more time on a player that's not at the club anymore. We won a big game. Breathe.

Haha bloody hell numero!

Don’t get me wrong the guy was class from the day he turned up. I remember that little backheel pass he did when he come off the bench in his first game and thinking we might have a player on our hands here. Scoring 49 goals or whatever it was obviously showed his finishing was in there.

What I meant was that coming to England where the standard is obviously a lot higher he did struggle to finish chances. Working under an attacking manager helped him. I think if he would have played under a Mourinho it would have been less likely he would ever have reached the heights he did because he would have been playing full back some games and running for long balls. Meaning that he wouldn’t have had the opportunities to refine his finishing when playing at a higher standard.

When he left he was one of the top 2/3 players in the world and had the finishing at the top level to match.

Edit: I should have originally quoted howie!

Every once in a while I go down the list of all-time Liverpool goalscorers to see what legends Salah has passed this week.

Just pulled even with Ray Houghton for all-time goals in a Liverpool shirt. Should pass Jamie Redknapp and Peter Crouch in the next month. Outside chance he catches Steve Nicol and Jimmy Case by the end of the season.

It's almost unreal what he's doing. He's been here less than a year and he's already 74th on our all-time goals charts. Absolutely ridiculous.

Keep him well away from the Everton game. Even if there's no injury, and he feels fine, rest him. Everton would love to give him a kicking and this season's version of Funes Mori could make themselves a hero with some of their fans. I'd rather avoid that.

To be honest, I'd probably leave Firmino out of this one too. All that business with the racism investigation, only for him to then be cleared, will mean the bitter blues will be desperate to get stuck in. That in itself is not reason enough to leave him out, but if you also add in the shift he puts in, and the fact that we will need him fresh and firing at City and also for the run in, then I'd leave him out at Everton.

Solanke. Ings. Start them. Make 3-4 other changes too. And still beat Everton.

Agreed.

I'd start the likes of Clyne and Moreno too. The priority must be the City game now.

So who would be the top three players who did. Obviously Gerrard but he wasn't a signing as much as a youth product. Who would be the next two if it wasn't Alonso? Especially as he scored from a rebounded penalty and lots of players would miss that...

Carra, Hyypia, Didi, Dudek, Garcia? Not to downplay Alonso’s influence, but those fellas were more influential for me Clive.
