The point has not changed yet Stu - every player that has been mentioned has at least one attribute that is far above average. They are also all pros so are already in the top 1 or 2% of people who play tthe game. The tip-top ones then apply themselves singlemindedly, may get good coaching and hope for a bit of luck.

What we have not seen here is any tip-top player that has no above average attributes that "trained" themselves into it.

People are forgetting that the ability to work hard and push yourself also has a genetic component. Not all brains are created alike.

Yes, because the conversation is about professional footballers. As has been said on numerous occasions, there is a basic raw material you need to get entry, obviously.

Why would we be having a discussion about why Stephen Hawkins isn't playing up front for England. It'd a ridiculous conversation to have and nobody, anywhere, has suggested it.

You said you don't train to get quicker; when you do, and Mark said effort always trumps genetics, which it doesn't. They were the actual points being challenged.

You are not getting to grip with the fact that the lads who made it are in the top 2% because they made it. All the lads who aren't in the 2%, and are on the bins now after being the best player in the team at 14, had the same "above average" genetics. So did probably thousands of other kids who had the same raw material at the age of 3 as many pros but their development never took them to football.

Everyone who plays football had to have a decent hand of raw materials dealt to them to start off with.

The deciding factor in what happened to that hand afterwards was not genetics. It was nurture.

If you say that all the people/athletes in the discussion are understood to have superlative genetics, I agree with all of the above - minor caveat, as said I do not think you can train into having measurably more pace, its just not supportable.

I guess the point that you are arguing against can be summed up this way.

Do you feel there are levels a given player cannot reach through training or coaching?

I see Rafa is very complimentary about Lallana in his report on his ten players to watch from both sides in tonight's game.

Not sure any of them are Rafa words to be honest. Seems more like he was asked which players would make an impact and the ghost writer filled in the rest.

He's the English Joe Allen, he's just very very average, honestly believe if we pay above £20m for him it'll be Rodgers Andy Carroll signing.

Not having that.

He wasn't very very average last season. 9 goals and 6 assists in the league, i will be happy if he carries on being very very average with stats like that for us (If we do get him).

Charlie Adam had similar stats for Blackpool, Adam and Shelvey had similar stats last season for stoke and Swansea, should we buy them back?

Not one other team wants him and we're offering £25m for a player who didn't play a top flight game till he was 24.

He's not a bad player, like Allen he's just very average, and if your north of £20m you expect a bit more than that.
