Running shoes question

I'm in my second week of the couch to 5k running programme and I'm running in shell-toes for now which are blatantly unsuitable (calves & shins are hurting) and I'll be getting some running shoes end of next week.

I've been advised to go to one of those shops where you run on a treadmill and they measure your gait and advise what shoes to buy. Problem is I can't justify spending upto £100 on a pair of trainers right now. Equally I don't want to buy some cheap shite that'll fuck my legs up. Any advice from GF runners on what I should buy, even if it's just an interim purchase?

Ouch. Sounds like shin splints. If so, trainers won't change anything; rest is the only cure.

JJB Williamson Square have a very decent running section.

Got myself a more than acceptable pair of Adidas runners for £39.99 there a couple of weeks ago. I've been running for over 25 years and never paid more than £65 for a pair and never had any of that assessment on a treadmill shite.

Just get youself a comfortable pair and take it easy on the runs for a while. A decent soak in the tub afterwards nursing a cold stella will put you right as rain.

Asics shoes are the best for running. I bought a pair for about 70 quid and they have lasted me 18 months so far. The gel on the sole of the foot is far better than the foam you get on some of the Adidas ones as it is more durable to impact.

I went to that jippo shop sports direct and picked up some Asics Gel for about £35 and they are great, I use them for running and for squash (they are more comfortable than my professional squash trainers).

If you are doing a lot of running then I would deffo go for the analysis. You may be lucky enough that your biomechanics don't cause you any problems, but if you pronate a lot you deffo would be better getting the right shoes.

I've just had to have special innersoles made at a cost of £150!

How to work out your gait? Look at the trainers you've been using and look for excessive wear on either side, excessive wear on the outside is underpronation/supination, inside is overpronation.

I'd still go to the specialist running store, get them to check you out and see what they recommend and then go on ebay and search for the ones you want, you'll find them a lot cheaper and will have the peace of mind of already trying them out.

asics are generally a decent running shoe. Running in shell toes is a big no no.

I think you could get a pair for around 40-50 quid for running up to 5k. A running shop will get you on a treadmill and tell you which shoe you need.

They'll then try and sell you the dearest shoe in the shop. Only for you to go weelllllll I've only got x amount of cash or just head off and buy them online cheaper.

If you've got sharp pains in your shins it'll probably be shin splints and what you need to do is rest em. (whilst you get your new trainers)

After a week or two they should settle down. There are a couple of views on whether or not you should stretch before running. I always preferred a light stretch before and a slow jog to warm up before you hit your normal running pace. Then stretch of afterwards. If you not doing either and your new to running then yep running in the wrong gear and not stretching will only hinder what your trying to do.

The first few weeks will be tough but once you've coughed, sweated and got past the initial what the fuck am i doing you'll get into it.

The thing is not to worry what other people are doing and just progress at your own speed. That'll get your confidence up.

My ankle is fucked now for running so I've taken up cycling. Still having birds go past me on mountain bikes and the other week a fella went past with one normal leg and one carbon one. But fuck it just go with it.

Thanks all. Some good info here. I'll rep until I run out. Bri, it's the couch to 5k that I'm doing. I'm on the second week (albeit I'm actually repeating week 1 as it was fucking hard) and I'm sure it'll go well but I do need to sort the footwear out asap. The treadmill trial then buying online sounds good. I'll put a pic up of what I end up with.

Cheers chaps.

Redder you should have no percieved ides about what brand of shoe will suit you . I went to a secialist shop and paid well over the odds for a pair of Nike. However now I know my gait the next pair will be right and cheaper.

Everyone is different but I bought myself shit pair of addidas for 12 quid and promised myself a new pair once I had run 5k without stopping.

I went to a running shop and did the full video sales malarkey.

I wanted asics but I hated the feel of them.

My next pair will be when I hamve done 25 k.

I would definately advise getting the gait checked, see how you run and then buy the shoe that feels the most comfortable.

I would also stress the importance of stretching/cooling down. You may feel pain/tighness which could cause you to then run slightly differently next time (or even during a run), then there is a good change of a knock on injury. I felt tight calves (lack of stretching) which caused an achilles injury due to over compensating (not running correctly). If I had stretched the calves then there would have been no ankle problem.

RL, there's a national chain called Sweatshop where I had my running gait analysed and ended up picking up a very decent pair of trainers for £60. I don't run on the road - treadmill in the gym is my limit, but it made a huge difference and took me a while to get used to the shoes correcting my pronation.

They'll analyse your running style and they've got offers on at the moment. You'd be able to get yourself a very good pair under £60-£70 :

My interim solution was to get myself a pair of Asics Patriots (?) reduced to under £35 from Sports Direct. Tried them on Monday and they're a revelation. Out again tonight. Shins are still a tiny bit sore but a lot better than they have been.

I do a lot of running, marathons & half marathons mainly and have had problems with my shins from time to time. Went to a physio and she suggested I rub ice on the front of my shins and this actually helped with the soreness.

  • 7 years later...

I am bored of doing weights but so am going to start running as I need something to focus on, otherwise I get depressed especially this time of year and I also need to get a lot fitter.

My problem is I am flat footed and whenever I have done any running on the past my calves hurt like hell. I have read up on Motion Control trainers but where will they sell them? Also does anyone know of any stretching routines for my calves?

Go to a decent running shoe shop and they'll measure your gait. Video you on a running machine and let you know if you over pronate. That'll tell you whether you need support or not and then recommend the right type of shoe.

I've got some on cloudrunner for Christmas- can't wait to be slow and shit in shiny trainers.
