Last season Villa at home was the first time we shifted Gerrard to the 'controlling' midfielder, and he was (understandably) fucking awful. There was no tactical masterclass from Lambert, we were just awful. That won't happen again, and we'll twat them all over the shop.

The first half of that game last season was as bad as anything.

Get Lambert in the team. Two up top. Their central defence is made up of carthorse bruisers and will be booting Mario all over trying to get a rise out of him. Get Lambert in to give them something else to think about and take some of the pressure off Mario.

We played him in a midfield 2 not at the base of a 3.

Correct, that game last year was one where it was obvious we needed someone off the bench to help us claw it back after Gerrard and Sturridge had hauled us back into it.

 

I'm hoping this year they won't be able to run so easily through our central midfield and expose our centre backs. I would be incredibly tempted to put Can in for this game instead of Gerrard (solely due to pace) but I doubt that will happen.

Given that he's one of the few who never went away in the international break I don't see us not starting Gerrard against Villa. He'll probably play Sat then get an hour in the week.
