I'm relieved it's not Curbishley, simply because I can't bear that 'One Man and his Dog' whistle he does to attract players' attention. Steve Bruce looks destined to get teams up to a certain level of muscular mediocrity only to then watch them slip back into a miserable decline.

My Wolves supporting mate reckons it's Bruce. Apparently Curbishley turned it down because he wanted a two year deal. Bruce was happy to take it to the end of the season and put together a snazzy powerpoint presentation highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of the current Wolves squad which the board lapped up.

Must be a handy life being a shit manager. Land a job, pick up a healthy amount of cash for doing a mediocre job, get sacked & have a nice pay off. Then wait around for some small club to sack their manager before repeating the cycle. It's the only job I can think of that you can get so well paid for doing a poor job, repeatedly.

Another contender outside of the 'usual suspects' emerges:

Wolves eye Reading manager Brian McDermott for Molineux vacancy | Football | The Guardian

Wolves are continuing their search to replace their sacked manager, Mick McCarthy with Reading's Brian McDermott emerging as a new candidate. Steve Bruce has been the bookmakers' favourite for the past few days after the withdrawal of Alan Curbishley from contention but sources indicate McDermott is on the radar of the Wolves owner, Steve Morgan, and the chief executive, Jez Moxey, although it is unclear whether they have firmed up their interest.

The former Arsenal player, who has moulded Reading into promotion contenders in the Championship, is on a one-year rolling contract and would not cost a huge amount in compensation.

The Brighton manager, Gus Poyet, has also been linked to the vacancy at Molineux, although sources close to Wolves have played down the interest in the Uruguayan.

Wolves would also be looking at having to pay substantial compensation as Poyet is less than a season into a five-year contract.

Bruce is still waiting to hear if and when he would be granted a second interview after holding talks last Friday with Morgan and Moxey.

It does now appear the search for a new manager may extend beyond Saturday's Premier League game at Newcastle, the initial target set by Moxey a week ago.

Curbishley ruled himself out over concerns about how he would be expected to run the club. Reports that the former Charlton and West Ham manager's interest cooled because he was offered a deal only for the remaining 13 games of this season are wide of the mark.

McCarthy's No2, Terry Connor, who has been in charge of training, could now find himself having to take on a caretaker role unless there is a rapid outcome in the managerial search.
