No offence Dave, and I fully understand what you are saying because if anyone tortured and killed a member of my family then I’d want them dead too, but its lines like this that really annoy me.

 

I don’t believe in the death penalty no matter what the crime because a murder is a murder no matter who says its ok, in my opinion. But what pisses me off is when you see a line like yours that suggests that people who don’t want to see child murderers strung up, automatically want to just “pat them on the head” or “send them on a holiday”. I don’t. I want them to do life in prison. Proper life in prison. With no hope of parole. They should only be allowed outside for 2 hours a day to try and keep them healthy enough so they can live long enough to serve a proper sentence. They should be allowed a radio and maybe 1 hour of TV every Saturday and Sunday and maybe 2 newspapers a week just so they are kept sane and aware of the real world and what they are missing. The other 21 hours of the day they are locked up in their cells

 

I’d bring back chain gangs and as much menial services as possible like graffiti clean ups, and the likes done by these to lessen the burden on the tax payer.

 

Lesser crimes would not result in jail terms (non-payment of fines, shop lifting, etc) but would instead result in much longer terms of community service cleaning parks, and streets, etc. Put these people outside football grounds after matches and make them clean up the mess left. All for free as part of the community service

The whole point about this case was the fact that it was not normal, it wasn't normal behaviour, it didn't come about from a misspent youth, or gang culture it was two fucked up boys, primarily fucked up by family and society yet, for some the immediate response is 'string em up!'

 

It is a fucking good bet that taking that attitude will lead to a society with a high rate of re-offending, just as America which favours punishment more than justice has. Wanting a bit more from your judiciary process than punishment and retribution isn't being a bleeding hearted liberal, it is actually being pragmatic as this costs less, they cause less trouble when released and able to fit into society that much better.

That is one of my biggest gripes. Prison should be a place you should be truly petrified to go to. It should be a deterrent. For some minor offenders it’s just seen as a wee break or a rite of passage.

Given that it's proven not to be a deterrant, check out the US if you want, and certainly isn't going to be one for kids that have been so fucked up that they become such fucked up adults, and that it would lead to the deaths of many innocent victims (very many) what is the actual reason you want it? I accept that he was making his point a bit bluntly but he was only stating a fact. SD is more than capable of defending himself but his post was a comment on the terms of the perpetrators' release from prison, not the crime itself

It's clearly a subject people get extremely emotional about and there was a time I was one of the string 'em up brigade. I think it would be a harsher punishment for someone to spend all their days behind bars than to kill them, so I am pro-harsher sentences on this one and think that life means life, behind bars.
