Watched a programme about Ian Wrights career last night.

One thing that struck me when they interviewed him, and former players like Seaman and Merson, was how they talked about the arrival of Bergkamp. All of them were in awe of him and they all said he transformed the dressing room because his standards were so high they all lifted themselves and he not only hugely improved how they played, but the mentality of the side as well.

Wright did make me laugh, he said he roomed with Bergkamp-  because Bergkamp wore full pyjamas to bed, he went and bought some as "thats what Dennis did, so it must be right".

Its shows the effect one quality addition can make to a side.

Watching Wrights goals made me think he was everything that Sturridge should/could have been

All about attitude. Wright was still playing none league into his early 20's and was working as a plasterer to make ends meet and was determined to make it to the top and stay there despite career threatening injuries.

Sturridge is another mummy's boy, whose been spoon fed throughout his life as part of the academy generation and has developed the ridiculous sense of entitlement a lot of them have got now, despite doing nothing in their careers to have earned it.

It wouldnt surprise me if sturridge still got into his mums bed in the middle of the night after pissing his own

Only if she went and picked him up and carried him....no way he'd walk across the landing in the dark on his own....I am assuming (probably wrongly) he does not sleep with the light on of course.

You cant deny his passion, he loved Arsenal, that much was clear in this programme. Bet we monitored the shit out of him while he was at Palace, just as the wheels were coming off here

Don't help that Sturridge was a child star and was on £60k a week at 18, that shit must fuck up these boys mentally for years, imagine the shit you'd do if you was on £60k a week at 18. I thought I was the bollocks because I was on £800 a week at 18.

I think some sort of wage cap until players are 21 should be brought in, even if the money is kept in holding until then but being on that sort of money must fuck up most youngsters drive, if it's cold and wet outside why go run around a field when your already a millionaire when you could just stay in your warm luxury house, especially if your not that bothered about playing football. Balotelli is another he was supposed to be so good at 17/18 he had all the money in the world but doesn't seem like he enjoys playing football so therefore doesn't give a fuck about working hard to become better. What's the point in getting better and working harder when you can make exactly same by not doing anything at all except fucking about with your mates and letting off fireworks.

I remember him going to arsenal for big money but he was mainly under the radar for us when he played for palace. We'd beat them 9-0 that season and had rush beardsley and Barnes so we wouldn't have wanted him then. Iirc, He had a bad injury and came back for the fa cup final and scored 2 against the mancs. He exploded for them and took them up notch but don't think they won much with him till wenger came. Very good player tho and he was always a danger

The club implemented a 40k a year cap on academy players last year.

It's been criticised on here as cost cutting.

That's how I imagined Suarez came across here in the 13/14 season.

To see a player still so determined despite having so much ability is only going to have a positive impact on the rest of the team.

I have an unsupported theory that poverty breeds better players so instead of moving the first team and the academy together or build expensive training facilities they should be forced to play on needle ridden concrete pitches with footballs made of rolled up rags.

If the club still want to make use of the land they own they could house the kids in Brazilian style Favela's. If a kid starts complaining that the water he's given is brown ad smells of shit or isn't as clean tasting as the San Pellegrino he's used to he get's released.

La Masia's design was based on Venezualan slums, don't you know?

That's a good first step but it should be implemented across Europe, academy players shouldn't earn £40k a year anyway!

So basically Croxteth in 1982 then.

£800 a week at 18. Drug dealer ? Rent boy ? Professional beggar ? ICT prodigy ? Plasterer ?

Nice if you could get it like. I was on £150 a week at 18 and lived like a King. It was 1986 like.

Demarai Gray

He has looked very promising whenever I've seen him. If we sign him I would be OK with that, so long as we sign another, more accomplished player. Mind you, Leicester will want an unrealistic fee relative to his current level (and why wouldn't they?) so at that point we might as well just shop higher up the food chain.

Doubt this will happen. Leicester will probably slap an unrealistically high fee on him and we won't pay.

I've barely seen him play but he doesn't strike me as a top talent, for some reason. We need a player of his profile (quick) but I think there are better options than him.

I agree that the English tax will likely mean any transfer fee for Gray would be ~£25m or more. Interested to know who you think the better options would be?

We know Julian Brandt is supposedly very high on Klopp's wanted list come the summer, and with these links to Gray, it would seem that players comfortable in wide attacking areas are certainly in Klopp's thinking for next season.

I'm of the opinion that we need a left footed player in these wide attacking areas, and is one of the reasons why I'd like to see us go after Domenico Berardi, the main reason is that he's a very talented player of course.

Federico Bernadeschi is another young Italian who has been getting a fair bit of praise over the past couple of seasons, but I've not seen as much of him as I have Berardi, despite Berardi's time out through injury. (I think CD mentioned him earlier in this thread).

Thomas Lemar at Moncao would also be a very good option for wide left, but I can't see any way that Monaco would allow him to leave, nor can I see him wanting to leave, seeing how well Monaco have played this season. His team mate, Bernardo Silva, would also be a cracking signing.

If we're going the youth route, the first one I would look at is Mbappe at Monaco. He isn't strictly a winger, he also plays up top, but that kid is something special. Lemar and Silva are also quality but I think they are out of our reach.

As you said, Berardi and Bernardeschi are two good ones but I think we're far more likely to look in Germany. Mbappe is the dream for me, though.

Whatever happened to the Liverpool way porn thread?

And if you were going down the more experienced route...?
