Everton expected to make a move for Cardiff City's Malky Mackay as successor to David Moyes at Goodison Park

Moyes, who is taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, is also involved in the process of finding his replacement at Goodison Park. His preference is for Mackay.

Mackay, a fellow Scot, is well-known to Moyes and although he has just gained promotion to the Premier League with Cardiff it is understood that he might be interested in the move.

Mackay met Cardiff owner Vincent Tan in London last week, but the club said this was only to discuss transfer targets.

Mackay is not the only candidate and chairman Bill Kenwright is determined to speak to other managers.

Wigan Athletic’s Roberto Martínez figures in Everton’s thinking, as does Mark Hughes, a former player at the club, while Celtic’s Neil Lennon has also been linked.

Swansea City’s Michael Laudrup has ruled himself out, and while Porto coach Vitor Pereira is an outside candidate, he could be interested.

Ferguson, meanwhile, is preparing for his final match at Old Trafford against Swansea, with the club fearful that a possible supporters’ backlash against Wayne Rooney, who has asked to leave the club for a second time in three years, could disrupt the tributes planned for the outgoing manager.

A guard-of-honour is being scheduled for Ferguson before the players lap the pitch after the Premier League game against Swansea City as they celebrate a 20th league title.

Ferguson will address the supporters — as is traditional after a title triumph — from a specially-constructed stage. A “Champions 2013” mosaic will be unveiled before the match.

United are keeping their plans closely guarded but, after the match, Rooney will lift the trophy and could be greeted with a lukewarm reception given the fact that he met Ferguson two weeks ago to express his desire to leave having grown frustrated at his loss of status.

It remains to be seen whether Rooney starts today’s match although Ferguson is keen to include veteran midfielder Paul Scholes who has announced his retirement.

Moyes is expected to take coach Jimmy Lumsden with him to United but wholesale changes to the backroom staff are not expected with Ferguson’s assistant, Rene Meuelensteen in particular, highly rated.

It is possible that Moyes might, however, also try to hire Everton’s chief scout Robbie Cooke.

The new United manager will also bid for Everton left-back Leighton Baines, which could lead to Patrice Evra’s departure. Moyes is not interested in Marouane Fellaini but he will need midfield reinforcements.

Contract talks with defender Rio Ferdinand will begin after next weekend, the last day of the league season, and the 34-year-old is expected to agree a one-year extension.

Moyes admitted that although he was delighted to succeed Ferguson, he felt a pang of guilt at leaving Everton after 11 years.

“I will be sad to leave them,” he said. “I was the one telling the players: ‘It will be this year, come on let’s do it’ so I feel bad that I have to say cheerio.”

Be careful. That's one of Dave Usher's best mates and drinking buddy you're taking the piss out of. They've been carried out of many a pub together.
