All over the media that Moyes has met with Ferguson and Giggs to discuss Manchester United related business.

Surely this is taking the concept of taking the piss to new levels. He's still under contract to, and being paid by Everton. And not a peep of disapproval from that little shithouse Kenwright.

This kind of attitude has always pissed me off with clubs and the mancs. You see it with players usually but with coaches too, "oooh well you know when a club like united comes calling you can't stand in their way", Roy Hodgson for example, Jim Smith et al. Fuck off, show some fucking pride.

This will go down well across the park.

Could Rafa the 'winner' really cross Stanley Park?

WHAT kind of qualities would Blues fans like to see in any new Everton manager?

A trophy-winning pedigree would be nice. Obviously.

Ideally he’d be out of contract – to avoid any transfer pot being diminished by compensation claims.

He must want the job, of course.

Ability to settle in the area would be an advantage.

And ideally he would have the ability to win matches at Anfield.

Step forward the man who fits the bill in every single category, yet still features below Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Dougie Freedman and Gus Poyet in the betting.

Rafa the Gaffer for Everton?

Clearly Señor Benitez would have to accept that perhaps Everton isn’t as small a club as he once thought. But his Europa League success on Wednesday night was, impressively, the fourth successive club he’s brought silverware to. Would Everton even consider the claims of a manager who is clearly a winner? Probably not. If so, it would be their loss and somebody else’s gain.

AT A rough count, about 40 managers have occupied the hot-seats of our two famous football clubs.

And of that number, David Moyes is only the third to leave the city to manage another rival.

Howard Kendall, largely driven by the ban on his champions from playing European football, left to try his hand in Spain, while in the curious case of David Ashworth, Liverpool’s title-winning boss of 1922 left the Reds on course for a second successive crown to join Oldham, who were promptly relegated.

Every other boss was either sacked, resigned or retired. Which probably reflects exactly where both our great clubs stand in the current grand scheme of things. Managers used to be dragged out of Merseyside kicking and screaming. Now, if they achieve ‘success’, it’s a stepping stone to bigger and better jobs.

DAVE WHELAN is getting on a bit. But as a hugely successful, hard-nosed businessman he’s clearly in possession of all his faculties. So why all the digs this week about Everton’s status as a ‘big club’?

A teenager could perhaps be forgiven for being unaware of Everton’s standing in the British game, but not a switched on 76-year-old.

Doubting Dave is definitely old enough to know about Everton’s standing as a truly ‘big’ club.

When Wigan were still toiling in the Northern Premier League – and making headline grabbing applications to join the Scottish Second Division – Everton were knocking back Brian Clough, courting Don Revie and screwing up the appointment of Bobby Robson (a ‘feat’ they actually managed three times!) in their search to replace Harry Catterick.

The Everton manager’s job was THE hottest ticket in town. When Wigan were finally successful in gaining election to the Football League in 1978, Everton were celebrating a centenary which had seen 96 of those seasons played in the top flight of English football.

And when Wigan were winning their first silverware in senior football – the Freight Rover Trophy – Everton were about to land an eighth league title, a first European trophy and be denied a treble by Manchester United at Wembley.

Wigan’s FA Cup success last Saturday was a wonderful, heart-warming tale, a flashback to how FA Cup finals used to be.

Which is why their chairman should remember that history, heritage and support are what help give a ‘big club’ its status. Dave Whelan is surely old enough to know that.

Verheijen: He’s hardly a ray of sunshine

DAVID MOYES hasn’t even started at Manchester United and the green-eyed monsters are casting envious glances in his direction.

Dutch coach Raymond Verheijen tweeted this week: “The dinosaur of all dinosaurs get a 6 year (!) contract to manage one of the biggest clubs in the world. Only possible in Jurassic Park.”

And followed up with: “The Man United players better prepare themselves for their training camp in Austria with 3 sessions a day for 4 consecutive days. Good luck!”

Moyes is in good company though.

Verheijen has publicly criticised the training methods of Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester City and Feyenoord – and caused a storm when he suggested it was Gary Speed’s wish that he succeeded the Wales boss ... just two days after his funeral.

The current destination for such a highly sought after, medically astute, well regarded coach? Verheijen is assistant manager of the Armenian national side.
