January 2023 Transfer Thread

It seems like our current strategy is to target elite young players in Europe. Nunez, Tchouameni and Bellingham all fit that template.

I think we need to go back to what we did in Klopps first window though. Gini and Mane felt like really underwhelming transfers at the time, however they turned out to be perfect signings. Both talented and proven in the Premier League but with potential to kick on even further. I'm not sure who the 2022 equivalents are, but that's the sort of players we need to be bringing in within the next two transfer windows. I feel like we've got the wrong idea and we're trying to be too clever!

If we are gonna spend 100m on our midfield then for me i hope it isn't on one player....especially when that one player is potentially Bellingham.

Two really good players who are really good at the things we need from midfielders in our set up for about 50m each would make us better and help fix our glaring weakness.

We’re doing the same thing still just the fees are through the roof now.

Yeah, the fees are high unless you find someone who has to sell (like Porto with Diaz). We don't want to pay that, which is why we're pushing so hard with players like Ramsey, Elliot and carvalho. As you generally need more than a player per year. I'm not sure how sustainable that is though with those types of player.

£100m or thereabouts is crazy money for someone like Bellingham. If you're spending that, then you want the finished product. Not sure there's a Midfielder on Earth worth that amount right now.

Dr Bruyne is probably worth double

Yeah, look at our list of outgoings. For a start Mane, Origi and minamino out, Nunez in. Plus the club knew losing Mane and so cheaply they had to go for a marquee signing. They done the minimum they could as they do in most windows.

Ah yes. We definitely made the 65 mil for Nunez on Bosman Origi, 15 mil Minamino and 25 mil Mane.

We then used the net profit from that to buy Carvalho and Ramsey.

Maths is a strong point, I see.

We were being strongly linked with Tchouameni in the press towards the end of last season. We were definitely interested in him, if Madrid hadn't wanted him, or if he'd preferred the move to us, I think we'd have had a decent shot.

Imo the journalists have all been briefed on our Bellingham interest for the same reason - to convince the player to make us his first preference. If he's up for the move, and won't go anywhere else, we'll use that to drive down the fee.

The thing is, if anyone is prepared to offer him more money (eg. Any of the other top six on England, or Madrid) he will turn us down. This is blatantly going to happen.

If Mbappe went to Real Madrid as was expected, I'd have expected Tchouameni to join us.

Realistically it was Diaz (early) for Mané, Nunez for Origi and Carvalho for Minamino.

So you're saying we might land Bellingham if no other club comes in and offers him more money? That's basically what I think.

Not even sure he's this transformative long term signing that FSG want us to believe he is. He's a good player - for his age, very good indeed - but for the fee + wages he'll cost I think there could be better options.
