Got to get out of this notion that players not good enough to start are ok as 3rd 4th or 5th choice.

What happens is they inevitably get called upon and surprise surprise theyre shit.

Not good enough=not good enough.

In a perfect world you're spot on but we don't live in that. I definitely think we could improve in the sense that we should be signing a CB to replace Lovren and ideally he'd then be 3rd choice. But its rarely ever that easy

If Klavan isnt good enough(most likely he isnt) then neither is Lovren. Klavan gets stick but is only a bargain basement player,Lovren is supposed to be high end yet is equally as shite. Lovren pisses me off more because he's supposed to be a Mercedes to Klavan's 20 year old Ford or Vauxhall runaround.

Lovren is a better defender than Klavan though.

This is the kind of black/white thinking that really limits your ability to understand what's going on.

We are never going to have 25 players capable of being regular starters in a league-winning side.  It is just ludicrous to hold our club to that standard.  Even Barcelona have players like Alcacer and Andre Gomes in their squad.  No club in history has ever had world-class players as 2nd and 3rd choices in their position in every single position.

The key for LFC is in finding a balance.  A balance between finding 11 top players who can win us the league but then having huge holes behind them when they get injured, and spreading our quality exactly evenly across all 25 first team players.

Our 3rd-choice centre back is actually a pretty important position, that player is going to get 2000 minutes or so in the league on the pitch.  So when you look at our squad you have to say "yes, we need to spend big on getting a true #1 centre back this summer to play alongside Matip as our first-choice pairing" you also have to keep in mind that someone like Lovren or Klavan, who are not as good, are going to get significant minutes.  Therefore you want as good a player as possible there as well (while at the same time recognising that this player will never be AS good as the first choice pair, as you suggest).

Where did I say every player had to be world class?

What I meant was players like Lovren and Klavan who arent good enough should never be starting for the club, so not 3rd, 4th or any other number choice.

Theres no place in the swuad for players who cant be relied on to start a run of gamea when needed

You said if they're not good enough to start then they're not good enough to be 3rd or 4th choice.

Which is crazy, because it implies every player in our squad has to be good enough to start for us.  No room at all for a player who's 80% as good as the first choice in his position.  Or the versatile player who gives cover at a number of positions though he's not great at any of them, just competent.  Or a young up-and-coming player who's not consistent enough to start regularly but who will develop in the cups and covering for injury.

It's bizarre, and it implies that we're choosing from a completely different pool of players to reality.  There's no way we convince a player who's good enough to start a run of games for us in a title-winning season to come and sit on the bench as our 4th choice centre back.  If he were that good then he'd just go somewhere else.

He's shit.

Yet he became the orchestrator and the builder of our attacks, as the defence brought the ball out time after time in the second half, the mid-field hid.

I'm by no means either his biggest fan nor his biggest detractor, but the mid-field disappearing act that we witnessed today was a joke, add to that the shockingly far too late substitutions and the woeful willingness  to make a difference by said mid-field, takes the heat off of this fella for me.... well, for this week at least anyway.
