When it comes to goalkeepers, we're tempted to name good ones and say, "We could have had him..." For me, that just adds to a certain negativity as there's no end to the lament if we go down that road. We could do it with every position!

Perhaps it would be more productive to say who we could get now, who:

1. Would like to come here

2. Is clearly better than what we have already

Who are the names? And for the people who are well into their football, do they play in the sort of way we know Klopp wants his goalkeeper to play? And what sort of fee would their club demand?

Sergio Rico

Kepa Arrizabalaga

Jan Oblak

Jack Butland

These are all better than what we have. Oblak is genuinely world class and the others are quality young keepers. What we need more than a new keeper though is a new goalkeeping coach. Xavi Valero is with Rafa at Newcastle. Robert Elliot has had a better start to the season than any of our keepers. That says it all.

Reina went downhill badly as soon as Achterburg arrived and the save percentage for all of our keepers has been awful ever since. Karius is salvageable. Ward should've been playing regular football with Huddersfield. Ridiculous decision that was. Mignolet should've been binned before the start of the 2014/2015 season.

With all due respect, Rev, you recently named Oblak as a possibility for next summer!

Just wondering, but if we get dramatic and shift out two goalkeepers, and say keep Ward as the back up, who are the options that we think are a clear upgrade. Not a maybe, but a clear upgrade, someone who we are pretty sure will come in and boss it.

...

To be honest, Tony's mum would be an upgrade on either of our Keepers.

Yeah I saw him a couple of times, but then I wondered whether he was really attainable. Champions League year in year out at Atletico. Don't know about their salaries, but presumably competitive with what we'd offer?

I'd love to do it, but not sure, on second thoughts, how realistic it would be.

Edit:

Just read on and Boss has the answers. Repped!

OK, sounds like we could tempt him with a much better salary.

How much would Atletico want for him? Something silly?

Table football keepers have more to them than karius.

I watched the first episode of the new series of twin peaks and in it laura Palmer screamed and then flew off into the air in possibly the worst special effect I've ever seen and Karius... fucking Karius recreated that last night with his abomination of a free kick save. The rotation is pissing me off.

Repped, pissing myself here!

Yep, I think we would probably be looking at a world record fee for a keeper. Can't see us spending that kind of money on a keeper.

Like a lot on this thread, it baffles the fuck out of me why we have a former Tranmere Rovers goalkeeper - who never made it to the top flight - as our GK coach.

Get Rene Higuita in. Even fucking Grobbelaar's got to be better than this.

Joking aside, should we make a punt for Xavi Valero? Reina seemed to excel under him.

And whilst I'm at it, why the fuck havent we asked Hansen or Carra back to school part time our defence. Or maybe we have and they dont want to be involved or CBA.

Arguably two of the top 5 best paid pundits in the English game are going to come back and coach?

Never expected Hansen, just hoped. But Carra I guess I hoped more, given his comments. But hey, he gave his all for us so I have no bad to say of him.

Xavi Valero though, get him back.

Fucks sake get rid of Achterberg. He's teaching everyone poor methods.

Just because Carra was a superb defender doesn't guarantee he'd be a great coach, even a specialist defensive coach. Maybe he would but its not that clear cut.

Goalkeeping has become specialised and has become a bit of a niche in modern coaching as a lot of conventional outfield coaches simply don't understand it at all, this leads to mainly ex goalkeepers taking up goalkeeping coaching posts with not too much competition. It has become far too individual for my own liking and isolates keepers from the rest of any squad. With our team it seems that it looks like they isolate the defenders too!

I know it's revolutionary but why not give one or the other keeper a run of games? I'm assuming like most other positions on the pitch you need a few consecutive matches to get up to speed. All this changing for different competitions ain't helping keepers who aren't top class in the first place.
