Fascinating fact, a 'tow rag' was a piece of cloth attached to a sheet (rope) that dangled in the water behind the naval and other sailing ships. When the sailors wanted a shit, the dumped direct into the sea, pulled in the 'tow rag,' hence called because it was towed by the ship, wiped their arse on it then lowered in back into the sea to clean off for the next sailor to use!

The term has since become part of the venacular as an insult as 'toe rag.'

I always wondered what that was called.....

Yeah, we have a tendency to think of states and borders as these immutable things, but they've generally been in constant flux over the centuries. If you go back a mere 3,000 years, I think there's only one country in the same location, inhabited by the same people speaking the same language, as today.

India was a thriving community 6000 yrs ago.

Procopius describing the Empress Theodora:

“Often, even in the theater, in the sight of all the people, she removed her costume and stood nude in their midst, except for a girdle about the groin: not that she was abashed at revealing that, too, to the audience, but because there was a law against appearing altogether naked on the stage, without at least this much of a fig-leaf. Covered thus with a ribbon, she would sink down to the stage floor and recline on her back. Slaves to whom the duty was entrusted would then scatter grains of barley from above into the calyx of this passion flower, whence geese, trained for the purpose, would next pick the grains one by one with their bills and eat. When she rose, it was not with a blush, but she seemed rather to glory in the performance. For she was not only impudent herself, but endeavored to make everybody else as audacious. Often when she was alone with other actors, she would undress in their midst and arch her back provocatively, advertising like a peacock both to those who had experience of her and to those who had not yet had that privilege her trained suppleness.”

We’ve got some good conspiracy theories, these days, but we really don’t slander people like we used to.

The OED doesn't agree:

Another bit of shameful UK history in which Liverpool features prominently.

The deportations of Chinese sailors after WW2. Many had started families and were just rounded up without being able to tell their loved ones. The knock on  effect on them is awful.

There’s a plaque at the Pier Head near the Merchant Navy and Johnnie Walker memorials as lots of the sailors worked for the Blue Funnel line.

Video in link.
