If some of the selections on this thread seem wayward, we're in good company. Rolling Stone took the same challenge and fucked it up.

The covers here of Higher Ground, Bizarre Love Triangle and Rock & Roll are all fucking garbage - insults to great originals. The Dave Grohl one sounds like it's meant to be a piss-take. Even the White Stripes one is quite poor, while the Ramones are phoning it in.

That leaves four cover versions worth listening to. You don't need to be the world's biggest muso mag to know that I Fought the Law, Hallelujah and Hurt are covers right out of the top drawer. That leaves Love Buzz - one song out of ten - as a decent call.

Do not speak ill of that Frente cover you philistine.

There was a really poor sound quality version of a great cover on The Rider Podcast this week.

Portishead doing S.O.S by Abba. As different as you would expect. From a film soundtack apparently so should be about on Youtube and that pretty soon (it isn't now as far as i can see).

They were talking about that on The 6 Music Breakfast show the other day. Apparently (sorry if you already know this) it is Only meant to be heard when watching the film it was made for. It apparently loses its context and doesn't work.

Portishead's words not mine.
