Cover Versions that Beat the Originals

That Love Buzz one is only marginally better for me due to its quality of arrangement rather than anything else for me.

I sort of cheated a bit; I don't actually know the original, I just included it amongst the good ones on the basis that it's a good tune and I couldn't bear the thought that professional full-time music journos hadn't managed to come up with anything better than the original, other than a few obvious ones.

I was just looking at a site that did the top 30 covers better than originals and I hadnt heard of most of them.

 

They said a Springstein cober of 'Because The Night' by Patti Smith was better and I thought it was shit.

Gary Jules' version of 'Mad World' by Tears For Fears. The slower tempo and relative simplicity makes the words seem more poignant.

I'm not convinced it's possible to cover a song that you co-wrote.  Because the Night is (at least) as much Bruce's song as Patti's.

 

One or two of those covers are interesting, but (apart from a couple of the "usual suspects") I couldn't spot any that were better than the originals.  (Mind you, I'm an old fart and I've not heard the originals for half of that list.)

 

White Rabbit stands out as a particularly piss-poor effort.  Heart-Shaped Box and Downbound Train aren't great, either, but I always think live covers aren't meant to challenge the originals: they're just to entertain the people in the crowd (which is no bad thing).

I actually forgot that Springsteen wrote/co wrote Because the Night but it suits Patti's voice better in my view.
