Cover Versions that Beat the Originals

Arctic Monkeys version of 'Love Machine' pisses over Girls Aloud (ahem)..

Just listened to this. It doesn't. The Girls Aloud version is way better. I like (the idea of) The Arctic Monkeys, but that cover is just a bit plodding and totally misses the point of the pure pop energy of the original in its attempt to be a bit ironic.

This dosent beat the original as its a cover of Zeppelins Tea for One.

At this moment in time theres two 30+ year old guitarists who imo are in a league of there own.

Derek Trucks and the guy who playes this Joe Bonamassa.

For me I prefer Joe as he is the first guitarists since Page who just has something special in his playing.

Surprised this hasn't been raised yet.

Her piano version of YNWA is fucking stunning too. In fact, to veer off topic for a second everyone should go and buy Little Girl Blue, because it's a great album.

Never been a big fan of Elton John, but I used to quite like the original of Talking Old Soldiers. Still do, but since hearing her sing it live last year, I can't listen to the words without comparing it to Bettye Lavette's raw blues take on it.

That's how you cover a tune... She turns the fucking thing right upside down. The bit from around 2:10 forward to 2:55 just cuts me.

Saw them at Hampton Court the other week. Bloody good, though it was more the Beth Hart show than anything.

If some of the selections on this thread seem wayward, we're in good company.  Rolling Stone took the same challenge and fucked it up.

The covers here of Higher Ground, Bizarre Love Triangle and Rock & Roll are all fucking garbage - insults to great originals.  The Dave Grohl one sounds like it's meant to be a piss-take. Even the White Stripes one is quite poor, while the Ramones are phoning it in.

That leaves four cover versions worth listening to.  You don't need to be the world's biggest muso mag to know that I Fought the Law, Hallelujah and Hurt are covers right out of the top drawer.  That leaves Love Buzz - one song out of ten - as a decent call.
