I know a Spanish super star that was one time hailed as the best forward in the world, he didn't shin to bright under the Spanish banner either. But he was also broken when he entered the tournament.

One thing with Messi tho, when people say that he's in such a superior team thats why he's so good, but most or many of the goals that he scores he creates for him self, dribbling past two or three players before kicking it past the keeper.

I really don't think the international argument holds that much credence at the moment. At the age Messi is now the only real chance he has had was the last world cup where, of all people, Maradona fucked things up. They were never going to win it with him in charge.

The other thing is, when Maradona played how often could you watch him? It is really easy to watch every single game Messi plays in for Barca and Argentina.

In Maradonas day, before the internet erupted, I wouldn't have though you could have watched him more than 10-15 times a season.

Maradona played for poor clubs sides and a pretty poor Argentina side yet stil guided them to titles and world cups.Messi plays in the best footballing side in europe and gets alot of space beacause of the other players in the team,Maradona was Napoli for long stretches,he was also on the end of some of the nastiest tackles you will ever see,Messi gets protection from refs evey game.Maradona was up against the Juventus side of Platini and Laudrup and Arrigo Sacchi`s Milan side, with what was before he joined a mid table club.

Messi may become as good but not yet.

Maradona for me. In an age where players never got the same protection from referees, he would run at defenders, hurdle tackles, shoulder people off the ball that were about twice the size of him all the time keeping the ball within 6 inches of that wand of a left foot.

Messi still has the time to change my mind but for now Diego is still the master.

EDIT: Heh, I see lee has beaten me to it about the refs. Goddam slow fingers.

I think it's fair to say that Messi is the closest thing to Maradona for quite some time, yeah there was Zidane, but for me he was not even close to the level of the M's . One thing is for sure, anyone with that much talent will surely fuck it up at some point, they always do,

Best

Gazza

Mara

Zidane (loose screw)

Cuntona (loose screw, must be a French thing)

This poll should really be about how he will fall from grace, Coke, drink, slags or mental deficiency ....

I think if you are choosing the long haul and were looking for a player for 10 years you would choose Messi. He looks after himself and is a good pro to go with everything else.

Maradona came from the slums. He was lost for most of his career. His story reminds me somewhat of boxers like Joe Louis and to an extent Mike Tyson where spongers and criminals undermined them. There were times post 1990 when Maradona just looked rubbish, especially in his Seville days, his body was battered.

But I don't think Messi could join say Ossasuna and lead them to a couple of titles over the current Barca and Real sides. And the Milan team of the late 80's were one of the greatest teams of all time. For me thats why Maradona still stands alone.

Still Maradona for me. Winning the World Cup on his own, his achievements with Napoli are unprecedented. Messi is number 2 for me now, with plenty of time on his side to surpass El Diego. Messi playing in one of the greatest club sides, with some of the Worlds greatest players is what makes me go with Diego.

Good post.

The fact we are even able to discuss this just shows how amazing Messi is. As footy fans we are all very lucky to get to watch him. I didn't think I'd see another Maradona in my life time, but Messi has a real chance of being as good, if not better.

Nothing in it. And i don't think you can make an argument that would sway someone one way or another. I just prefer Maradona, but i couldn't say that Messi isn't as good as he was. Maradona has the WC, Messi has his dominance and goals in Europe. But Messi also has the privilege of playng for one of, if not the best footballing side of all time. Whereas Messi and Argentina never really had a chance with Maradona at the helm in SA, not because, as tooth daftly suggests, a conflict of interest, but because he's simply not a football manager.

I'm not totally sure on what you are saying there, if it's that Maradona is a shite manager then I agree.

Its different on some levels in another daft way, Messi's priority for me is Barca, Maradona's was Argentina and I think he had had a remarkable season for Barca and was not as fit and sharp as he should be for the next world cup.

But it's like comparing Fowler and Owen in some way in the same way club and country arguments revolve. Many England fans would place Owen as better than Fowler but most LFC fans the opposite. Having said that Maradona did great for his club but I think in time we will see Messi light up a good few WC's yet. Maradona won it but while people say he won it by himself, it's not as easy as that, Maradona is not controlling the Argentina goalkeeper or it's defence so when they won it he didn't do it single handedly. Likewise Messi did a good deal but Argentina went out the last world cup and it was little to do with Messi's contribution for me. It's perceived that Maradonas fellow teammates where shite.

The modern game just means we know every player and many play in europe etc.

Anyway all Messsi has to do is avoid anyone seeing his pecker in the shower and win a world cup for which he requires at least a half decent manager, Maradona couldn't manage a successful side in the Ryman league.
