Outside of going to Villa away once, my only other experiences of Birmingham have been in and around New St Station. It reminded me of St John’s Market.

We ended up going to Tamatanga, based on a recommendation we got from a barmaid, one of the only non joyless fuckers we met.

 

New trendy place, young attractive staff, cocktails and a bit of vibrancy in an otherwise dour colour scape. 
 

I don’t recognise anything on the menu, it was trendy remember, so ‘I said I like pretty hot, so somewhere between madras and vindaloo if possible?’

 

She looks confused and tells me she’ll speak to the chef, comes back and ‘yes’ that can be done.

 

What I got was a big standard curry base with sprinkles of dried chillis on the top.

 

As bad as that was it was probably the highlight as it’s objectively hilarious how bad and emblematic of the whole city it was.

I haven't been to Birmingham for years, but my abiding memory is that it felt like a massive sprawl of fuck all.
