Art....

Most art passes me by but recently i have become semi-obsessed with Caravaggio. Just unreal how brilliant his work is, and he was a loon as well.

I heard of him through a history podcast by Daniele Bolleli. Caravaggio was a seriously interesting guy and seriously talented.

You can probably find it free elsewhere, but it's well worth paying for anyway.

From that page:

During a visit to a church in Sicily, a priest offered Caravaggio holy water. Caravaggio asked the old priest what it was for. “It will cancel your venial sins, my son,” replied the priest. “Then it’s no use—Caravaggio commented—My sins are all mortal.”

I went to the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition yesterday. I’d had a hankering to go for years and finding out that Grayson Perry was (poncy word alert) curating it was the excuse I needed to get off my arse and get tickets.

I was not disappointed. I loved it.

I had wondered about the idea of arranging so many different styles together but it really worked. My only gripe was that in the main hall some of the pieces were hung so high up it wasn’t easy for us short arses to look at them properly.

Book me up for next year

There's a Picasso exhibition currently on at the Tate Modern, which I'm hoping to go to in a few weeks. Has anyone already been? Any good?

Just seen this - might be a bit late, but as the exhibition is on until Sept (I think), thought I'd still reply.

Yes. I posted about a few pages back. Was very good.

I went to the Walker Art Gallery last week. Just a quick walk around. But it was quality. I wasn't aware that they had such a vast collection or that it contained pieces by the likes of Rodin, Lowry, Titian, Monet, Stubbs and Cezanne.

The John Moores prize winners exhibition was great too.

Yes some good stuff in there ,one of my favourites is When Did You Last See Your Father, some episode in the English Civil War , not sure who painted it he has an odd name , it's good to have a walk around in there now and again.

Just back from a 4 nighter in Barcelona.

Took in the Fundació Joan Miró. Some wonderfully quirky pieces of art there.

Some pretty pretentious stuff too though. Particularly his minimalist series, which was literally a thin line on a plain background (https://www.tate.org.uk/context-comment/blogs/miros-minimal-series-painting-on-white-background).

His anti-art stuff was a bit silly too. When he'd paint something and then just decide to burn the canvas. Weird. But quite eye catching (https://www.fmirobcn.org/en/colection/catalog-works/5483/p-em-burnt-canvas-4-em-p)

I enjoyed it. Love it up in the Montjuic area of Barcelona. I tried to go to the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya too, but it was closing early due to a firework display and concert being held there for the local La Mercè festival.

So, I went to see some real life works of art at Nova Icaria beach instead. ¡Ay caramba!
