Great drumming performances

On my way in to work this morning, my phone decided to play "The Real Me" by The Who followed by "Achilles Last Stand" by Led Zeppelin. I'm pretty sure you would be hard pressed to find a better combo of songs to show off the abilities of the respective drummers.

Loving crazily good drumming at the moment. Hit me with some others, chums  (no drum solo's though, repugnant stuff).

My favourite things - John Coltrane (Elvin Jones)

Sing sing sing - Benny Goodman (Gene Krupa)

Aja - Steely Dan (Steve Gadd)

Heart of the Sunrise - Yes (Bill Bruford)

Eternity's Breath Parts 1 & 2 - Mahavishnu Orchestra (Michael Walden)

Good times bad times - Led Zeppelin (John Bonham)

The Kettle - Colosseum (Jon Hiseman)

Ringo's got loads, he gets a load of stick but he was such a great drummer, Rain is probably my favourite Ringo performance, either that or She said she said.

I kinda went for mental drumming on my list there, if it's more tasteful/restrained stuff you're after then there's plenty of that around too.

Mental is good, not too mental though. Napalm Death for example, i'll give that a miss.

Moon the Loon is the perfect example of mental for me, the amount of fills he throws in on "the Real Me" for example, is just unbelievable. Virtually one every bar.

For Keith Moon I would just say Live at Leeds, the whole gig is him at the top of his game, nobody else remotely like him before or since.

Repped - especially for the Fireball mention. Great percussion.

I always liked the drummer in the Icicle Works - Liverpool band...Chris Sharrock. Loads of tracks with really good drumming...even a drum solo on "as the Dragonfly flies" if I remember correctly.

Just been listening to "The Lamb Lies Down..." on my lunch then, Collins is boss on it, particlalrly on "Back in NYC" and "...Slippermen".

John Densmore is very under-rated, whilst not exactly frenetic, his drumming on the longer Doors tracks like "The End" and "When the Music's Over" is impressive.

Can't remember hi name but Paul welder's drummer - saw him at V2000 and he was immense.

I can't ever remember going to a gig and being blown away by the drummer, it was the highlight of the whole weekend. [/quote

I'm studying with him privately currently. Great chap and great drummer.

Helped me out acquiring one of his brothers kits too.
