Domestic double and 8th. Obviously would like both, but winning trophies goes down in the clubs illustrious history whilst 4th guarantees fuck all. I get the fact it would give us extra money to spend and no doubt it would give us better opportunities in the transfer market but winning trophies brings in extra cash and we are in Europe next season. Bringing in top notch players who cost a fortune doesn't always work out, so once again there are no guarantees we'd be up and running next season. Each to their own, it is all down to personal opinions.

P:S...where is the poll?

It takes time to create such an impressive poll.

This is literally the most boring argument ever.

If you don't finish fourth you are restricting yourself to not being able to win the league or champions league the following season. If you don't finish in the top four you can't sign the players to challenge and your current players aren't competing at the highest level to improve.

To the people who chose winning those cups the question should be how many seasons would you choose winning those two cups before you think fourth would become more important. 1, 2 3 or more? It's a pointless argument but if you want the club to be competitive you need to finish in the champions league places. End of.

Er, this season.

We have qualified for Europe, albeit the Europa League and don't think that other players from different leagues do not watch the FA Cup final or take notice of teams that win trophies.

Of course I would love us to be in the CL again, this season that isn't happening and with all the turbulence and changes we've had at the club over the last few years it would be a stretch to think we could just waltz back into the CL places. Especially when you factor in the bumpkin billionaires, the chav cheats and of course arsenal and the scum. Add that spurs and newcastle have had a great season and you begin to see the mountain we have to climb.

Shame a few are already feeing the effects of the thin air this low, and I'm not just talking about the players. Some fans need to get a grip.

This year, the Cup double. Offer it to me at the start of next season? CL qualification.

Yes, absolutely.

Only some kind of cunt would say they'd take a domestic cup every year over CL qualification, because only some kind of cunt would be stupid enough to claim "trophies are all that matters" and accept domestic cup success in exchange for never challenging for the title again, or competing in Europe's greatest cup competition.

This is essentially asking about sentimentalism, romance and a few days out in Wembley over hard cash, competing at the forefront of Europe and giving the owners a return on their money so they might stick around for a while.

I agree that the former is great but in today's day and age I would have to go for the latter. I also bet if our situation was reversed and we were looking like getting 4th and had been bummed out of both cups back in January then some people would be saying the opposite here.

If we don't finish in the top 4 we will never see Charlie Adam using his footballing genius to compete against the likes of Xavi, Messi, Ronaldo, Alonso etc

A day out at Wembley beating a championship team on penalties to win the mickey mouse cup or a wed night at Anfield under the floodlights playing the likes of Barca or Chelsea in the semi final of the champions league with all the prestige.publicity and drama

I asked the following in the WBA match thread, but obviously got swamped with all the love and affection that was being thrown around on the day!

Say the Mancs get pipped at the post by City, and finish the league in second. Add to that getting knocked out of the CL in the group stages, and getting their arse handed to them in the Europa League.

Then there's us that finish 8th in the league, but win the FA & League Cups.

Who do you reckon has had the better season?

Well put.

With the players we signed only one of the two options was realistic this year.

Exactly. Signing Henderson, Downing and Adam was never going to get us into the Top 4, everyone knew that, so if we do finish with two domestic cups, then that's a brilliant result and no better than we could have expected.

We need to do better in the league next year, though, and that means buying some good players this summer.
