Bench/Weights Advice

I've cancelled my gym membership because it's too expensive and i'm also too lazy to go after work at times, ergo i'm thinking about investing in a bench and some weights myself.

If I had the gear at home then i'd definitely do a workout every night as it's only the travelling that puts me off going to the gym really.

I live in a two bedroom flat and the spare room is quite small and already has a guest bed in there etc so i'm just gonna go for a normal dumbell bench and then have some dumbells and a bar-bell with adjustable weights.

A 50kg set should do the trick for now until I proper get into it.

Any ideas about where to look and what to buy would be greatly appreciated.

Argos are pretty good Ian. I got all my stuff (bench, weights, etc.) from there. I got my punchbag from a specialist sports shop though.

It replaced the girlfriend (joking!).

Alright Ian. Make sure you get to see one set up before you buy it, some of them are pretty shit when you assemble them and they cant do what they claim to.

Its a shame you dont live near Daventry, York Fitness have their offices there and you can get some dead cheap returns in their showroom.

if you are put off by travelling to the Gym in a month or two you will be put off by the stairs or the trip up the lobby

and they will sit in the corner

Mr Pessimism over there!

I live in a flat so no stairs involved! It will just be a case of getting the bench and putting in the living room and then doing a work out - nothing to it.

By the way, nice one for that Col, really appreciate it. The Argos stuff looks sound - should be able to get a bench and set of weights for about £120 so happy days. I take it the quality is decent?

Again, nice one mate.

The benches ones at Argos are probably going to be rickety pieces of shite that wobble. You want something sturdy and solid. I have the MArcy Weight Bench Pro, which is a great bit of kit. It doesn't look like it's made of rolls of tin foil and lolly sticks like some of the Argos ones.

It's about £150.

On a serious note, I find it likely that it'll sit in a corner unused after a few weeks. If you can't be bothered going to a Gym then it probably won't happen at home either.

I envy you Brownie mate, I'm fucking sick of the Gym now.

I used to enjoy it but now everytime I go there are literally GANGS of 7-10 teenage lads crowded around every fucking dumbell.

I'd love to get my own bench but there's no room in the house, I've even considered renting a garage for £20 a month just to whack a bench in!

I used to go to the gym 5 days a week but I thought fuck it, i`ll buy a bench and do it at home. I bought a full set of dumbbells and weights, a bench, a bar, a z-bar a punch bag, a speedball etc etc (you get the idea).

Anyway, after a few weeks it just gathered dust and I didn't do any exercise at home or otherwise for 18months. I only just got my act together and started back at the gym this year.

To stay motivated I now split my workouts between weights and cardio plus a sport (squash and cricket)

To be honest, get an adjustable bench without a bar holder and a variable weight dumbbells.

You can do so much with very little space necessary with them. They change their weight so you needn't have a massive rack of dumbs and whatnot.

Yeah that makes sense - I have to walk two miles to the gym so having the kit in the spare bedroom is the same! Not!

My walk to the gym is around 20minutes each way... I find its good warmup for the workout and I stroll back casually which usually takes 30-35minutes.

Its a nice cooldown for afterwards...

What? I thought that last time I saw you the feeling was that you were in the finest physical condition you've ever been in?

Haha yeah, if only! I was blowing out of my arse after the warm-up!

When I had the gym membership, I was running to the gym and back as a warm-up/warm-down, but it was just too much after a hard day at work.

If the gear is there for me, i'll do it, I know I will!
