Henderson doesn't play the same role as Whelan though.

Whelan had to attack & defend and tackle and create.

 

Henderson just has to sit in front of the defence and pass it on.

And he's not even as good at Lucas as doing that.

He was last season you’re right. He’s been let off the leash this season a bit more. In 13/14 he was playing further forward and chipped in with a few goals too from memory.

 

The point my mate made was that Whelan was good at a lot of things but his quality wasn’t particularly focused on one side of the game e.g., he wasn’t a destroyer, or a creator. I was just telling Carvalho Diablo that those midfielders exist. You don’t have to be a specialist like Alonso or Mascherano or example.

Excellent piece that, and although I'm not certain that Whelan is the most underrated player in our history, (Stevie Nicol or Ray Kennedy perhaps?), he is certainly up there.

He’s better in the attacking side of the role than Henderson cos he’s natural AM. Like Firmino is better in the creative/selfless part of his role than Sturridge, because he’s a natural AM.

I get that Hendo is box to box, but wtf does he do to make a significant contribution in those box to box forays? Not great defensively, far from great offensively, okay he's got a great engine but still ?

I think the uncomfortable truth - and what has not even been touched on in all the talk about him when he is at his best - is "where he is" has been the trainers table more often than not over the last 3 years. I agree, dont see that changing.

And yet this season Wijnaldum played in defence when Henderson stayed in midfield. You'd think that as a defensive midfielder he'd more easily slot into that role like Lucas did last season.

What nonsense. Henderson had a good game. Had a bit of a ragged 5 minutes in the first half but that was it.

Completely agree. Its a strange one with Henderson,we look much better with him in the team despite him being injury prone and lacking the pace he once had, yet people's inherent dislike of him won't let them acknowledge when he plays well.

Honestly I’m just fed up of seeing that vile thread title every time somebody wants to post about him good or bad. He’s a professional lad who always does his best. He was given the captaincy because he’s reliable with a good attitude and he’s not going to snake off at the first opportunity. He’s not Gerrard and he never will be but he doesn’t deserve the stick he gets because he doesn’t have the ability of former greats. He’s the captain of the club and now appears to be captain of England and he’s never brought anything but class to the role. This isn’t going to stop any dickheads having a pop but hopefully it’s stops that joke of a thread popping up every week.
