Vilas Boas, what happened to him?

Not many are good examples anyway - most had already made their first big move and won something

Allegri for his work at Cagliari got the Milan job for example

Ancelotti got Regiana to the top flight so got the Parma job

It depends why you appoint someone as well. Ancelotti was a club legend at Mlilan already and Milan tend to go for ex-players as managers. Guardiola and Enrique wouldn't have got the Barca jobs if they weren't club legends. Simeone was an Atletico legend. It makes it easier to succeed if you know the club inside out and were already successful there before.

FSG i'd assume wanted a young manager to come in and implement a dominant possession game (hence Rodgers and Martinez offered the job and not Paul Lambert who'd achieved more with Norwich). Three years in and he's failed to do that which is an indictment on Rodgers as well as the lack of a trophy. The football has been no better this season than under Kenny.

Just on current managers.

Van Gaal/league winning before joining the Mancs

Pelligrini/league winning before joining the blue Mancs

Mourinho/CL and league winning before joining them.

Wenger/league winning before joining Arsenal

Guardiola/Bayern No need to mention

Ancelloti/league and CL winning

Rudi Garcia- League winning before joining Roma

Allegri - league winning before joining Juventus

The main exception to the rule is Barcelona.  One club out of many of the top jobs.

I think you misunderstood what I said because that list doesn't refute my point at all.

I think you are not seeing that all those managers, with maybe the exception of Pellegrini (who tanked on his first "best gig") already had a "best gig" before and won something there

Maybe i'm  not seeing places like Lille as "best gigs".

Yeah exactly that. 1987. Just like Aston Villa in 1982.

To answer your question directly for Mourinho - being Portuguese - I would say of course it was.

This was a club that had won their league 7 of 10 years ( a fair few of those with him there as an assistant) before he came back.

They made it to the semis once and the quarters four times in the CL during that time and played in it every year.
