From the above article. Unless he thought The Observer wouldn't use it.

Ferguson has seen too many title run-ins not to know that points are always dropped along the way, sometimes in the most unexpected places, but is equally confident that his team has what it takes to bounce back. "You always get twists and turns, it's how you react that's important," he says. "I remember a few years ago when Liverpool beat us 4-1 at Old Trafford. That genius [Rafael] Benítez said they had planned to beat us by playing long balls behind us. Remember that? Clown."

What Ferguson may not care to remember is that he himself contributed some comedy of his own that day, trying to maintain United had been the better team despite a comprehensive hammering and Fernando Torres single-handedly leaving Nemanja Vidic's Footballer of the Year credentials in tatters, but his point is that United recovered to win the title by four points.

Ferguson felt threatened by Benitez during that title chase and it looked like we were back to being able to stand toe to toe with them once again.

This is why Ferguson and Dalglish do not get along because Ferguson know's that when it comes down to it Dalglish is capable of building a team to knock United off the top spot.

So is the quote real?

Apart from it being disrespectful and completely unprovoked, it also makes no sense. If Benitez said he'd beat them by playing long balls in behind them and then he actually went and did just that, then the sarcastic 'genius' comment and the clown insult are completely out of context with what he's on about.

If that quote is real, he was definitely bevvied when he said it.

His obsession with LFC is unbelievable considering we haven't exactly been consistent title rivals over the years. In fact we were only a genuine threat once in the last 20 years, yet the venom and hatred he feels for us is unparallelled. I reckon it must be something to do with the fact that we were never hated like his team when we were winning the title year after year. Nuetrals would cheer us on in European Cup finals - whereas the whole country (apart from a few in Surrey) were willing Barca to win last may.

Man Utd boss Ferguson reopens Benitez feud: CLOWN! | Premiership News | tribalfootball.com

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has taken a new swipe at old rival Rafa Benitez.

Ferguson was discussing his team's temperament when he had a dig at Benitez.

He declared: "We know it is a hard job, it is hard at the start and it is hard at the end. I don't have any doubts about our temperament. I think there is enough experience in the same place.

"They always want to win, that is the mentality they have here. There will always be twists and turns, it happens.

"Two or three years ago Liverpool beat us 4-1 at Old Trafford and that genius Benitez said they had planned to beat us by playing long balls in behind.

"Remember that? Clown."

the same "clown" that Mr. Ferguson felt compelled to write to after we put the holy grail further out of his reach by winning number 5 to explain to rafa how rafa/liverpool beat milan?

that's why he hates rafa, that and because rafa had the balls to stand up to him and take him on.

His obsession with Liverpool is pretty logical...

When folks look back in history at the greatest managers and greatest teams, it's United and Liverpool, neck and neck (I'm sure some will not like that statement, but as a neutral, and certainly no fan of United, that's how it looks).

Some will look to the European superiority of Liverpool, and other will look at domestic titles etc, and much of it is arguing the toss for the sake of it, but in reality, there just isn't any other team that comes CLOSE.

City are no rivals to United, neither are Everton to Liverpool. We (and Everton) have had our moments here and there, but the record books don't really flatter us.

So that's why he's obsessed with Liverpool, he wants to be make sure you have NO 'get out clause' - by winning the European Cup / CL 5 times... which is unlikely for him now, so he'll have to settle for 20/21/22 titles (maybe)

In many ways, the clubs are similar... suffered tragedy, essentially from two great non capital cities, and respected the world over with a long tradition of 'keeping it in the family'.

You'll be United's biggest rivals for at LEAST the next 15 years (the minimum time it will take another team to catch either of you up, if they were a VERY good team!)

Yea also the same clown that was reportedly straight on the phone when his grand children were in alder hey after car accident to offer help if needed!

That's the class of the man willing to put aside any rivalries in place of human compassion.

Being hated by Ferguson is pretty much the best compliment you can get as a manager, it's the same with all managers of his ilk. I remember when maureen was at the chavs and they pointed out on Soccer Saturday that the only manager he ever paid compliments to was Chris Coleman, who also happened to be the only manager he had a 100% record against.

If Ferguson tells you you've done a great job and he looks forward to sharing a bottle of wine with you after the game, the squelching you can hear is petroleum jelly.

Now that I think about it, didn't pretty much all our goals that day come from long balls?

Torres scored from long ball, Gerrard won penalty, didnt vidic get sent off when ball played over top and he brought down Gerrard, and from a pepe goal kick dossena lobbed Van der sar.

So what the fuck is ginsoak on about?

In fairness I think Coleman turned on him after the Saha tapping up disgrace. "He's a bulee, an I don't like buleees".......written to try and evoke a Welsh accent!
