RAM Upgrade for my iMac

Hello there

This is my iMac at the moment,

I'm after some more ram, I assume the next step up is 8gb.

I know this is a lot cheaper if you don't go to apple, I was just wondering where I would go though. There's load of places that do it I'm sure but I don't know what kind to get or where is generally the cheapest. Can anyone advise on the price too? I'll have to hold off if it's too much.

And would I be able to do this myself? I've sorted out the ram in an old laptop before but getting inside this thing will probably be a completely different game.

How many slots do the iMacs have these days? They used to have 2, but I think the bigger ones now have four slots. That'll mean adding rather than replacing, which is cost effective. Depending on what you do, 8GB is a fair whack of RAM. Crucial is good, Amazon is good (although, I recommend a good brand), as is dabs.com.

Also, Mountain Lion is pretty decent. You should think about upgrading. Irons out some niggles and is really quite a decent price.

My iMac is from 2010, so might be considered new enough to have 4 slots. I'll know when I open it up. I bought the 8gb pack from crucial.com, came to £32ish.

I'm a graphic designer and tend to have photoshop and illustrator open at the same time with big files in both, just been getting a little bit slow recently.

Do any of you know anything about Mackeeper as something to keep it clean(ish) and keeping it on its toes?

Will also upgrade to mountain lion as soon as I get a new HD to back up onto.

Mine is the mid-2007 imac with only 2gb RAM and to be fair to it, the fucker is still running beautifully. Not that I really trouble it too much, just a bit of video editing and Garageband really. And the porn. All the porn.

CCleaner is now available in Mac App store and it's as good as anything else out there for clearing up the hard drive. Apart from keeping an eye on disc space I've never really had to bother with anything else. Repairing Disk Permissions helps every now and again of course.

In our studio we've got a 27" iMac and upgraded to 8gb RAM recently. It's brutal. It's only ever crashed once since and that's because we were trying our hardest to make it happen!
