Rafa Benitez’s last bit of tinkering at Anfield was to force out the highly respected Dr Mark Waller credited with saving the life of former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier.

Waller had been at the club for 17 years as well as working for the England Under 21 side. His prompt diagnosis of a serious heart problem when Houllier complained of chest pains during half-time in a game against Leeds in 2001 led to the Frenchman’s critical heart surgery that night.

However, Benitez unfairly made Waller the scapegoat for all Liverpool’s injury problems last season — which came to a head when the knee problems of star striker Fernando Torres provoked Benitez into demanding a complete revamp of the medical set-up at the club.

This led to the appointment of the Australian Socceroos’ Peter Brukner as head of sports science at Liverpool and a typically dignified exit by the popular Waller, whose leaving was described by insiders as ‘deeply unfortunate’.

There had been some hope within Anfield that Waller might change his mind now Benitez has gone, but that is not going to happen.

Benitez, who will receive a minimum £4m payoff from Liverpool, will have to wait until the housing market picks up to make a profit on the sale of his £4.8m clifftop mansion in Caldy Village on the Wirral overlooking the Irish Sea, which is so grand it contains a lift to the fourth floor.

Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow, who has yet to build up a support base within the Barclays Premier League set, was the one club executive who missed out in yesterday’s election of eight Premier League representatives on to the FA Council.

You read something like that and you'd nearly swear that someone was briefing the press.......... Thank God we know that doesn't happen.

LFC Weekly July 13:

New LFC Head of Sports Medicine on World Cup and Aquilani's Fitness

Jul 13 2010

LIVERPOOL’S new head of sports medicine and sports science, Peter Brukner, has revealed the complexities of taking over the club’s medical department in a World Cup year.

The club doctor, who himself joined the Reds after being on the medical team for Australia’s Socceroos in South Africa, also told LFC Weekly that Alberto Aquilani has had a good start to his pre-season training.

"Alberto’s ankle, which was a problem last year, is now 100 percent healed," Brukner said. "He has been training and has looked very sharp. He’ll have to keep working on his injury prevention programme and if he does, I’m sure the supporters will see the best of him because last season was very frustrating for him injury-wise."

Brukner says that he has already either met or spoken to all of the players regarding their fitness programmes over the next few weeks, even those who are on holiday recovering from the World Cup.

"It is probably one of the more difficult summers to begin a job as a doctor at a football club that has a lot of players representing different countries at a major international tournament. All of the players are coming back at different times. The World Cup players are all having three weeks off from the time they returned to their country of origin. The first two to return are Milan Jovanovic and Sotirios Kyrgiakos. They’ll be joining us in Switzerland (on Wednesday). Then the next group will be the English boys, Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger who will do three or four days at Melwood before we return from Switzerland. On the day we do get back, so will the Argentinians and the four who represented Holland and Spain in the final. Staggering pre-season presents a challenge. I’m guessing that the World Cup guys will be pretty fit anyway. You don’t lose a lot in three weeks and they’ve all been in contact with us to speak about their programme over that period."

The full Peter Brukner interview, plus the story of the ex-Red who became a legend of Brazilian football, is in this week’s LFC Weekly. Pick up in local newagents or subscribe ahead of the new season here: magazine - Liverpool FC

What a cunt of an article. I'm sure Waller was a lovely guy and his swift action undoubtedly saved GH's life but some of the stuff over the last 2-3 years has been farcical. Agger's situation in particular was entirely Waller's fault, he wasn't qualified to head up a specialist sports-injury unit which is essentially what we have. The less said about the fucking horse placenta the better.

It's also been said that Rafa had no idea a new doctor was coming in to replace him as well. As apparently Waller pulled Rafa and he didn't have a clue what he was talking about.

Not true. There were articles as far back as February with quotes from Bernie Mandic about how Rafa had rung Kewell to get the number of the guy who fixed him. That was Brukner.

Any news on Hodgson's backroom staff? We are a bit thin on the ground at present with only Sammy Lee as Assistant Manager, John McMahon as Reserve Team Manager and John Achterberg as Reserve Team Goalkeeping Coach.

Who do we need to replace - Pellegrino and Valero really?

Have there been any other coaches go?

I still think we still need to replace the 2 Pako's personally. Both have been big losses to the backroom staff.

Well we could always look to bring back Pako Ayestarán as he has recently parted company with Valencia citing professional differences with Unai Emery. By all accounts he was very popular with the players during his time here and I agree that we have really struggled to replace his expertise.

Personally I think the biggest loss from last season's technical staff (Rafa aside) is Xavi Valero. Both Pepe and Torres have raved about his methods in the past.

I am becoming increasingly concerned that Roy is being forced to utilise the existing staff in order to minimise costs. We definintely need a new first team Goalkeeping Coach and I would welcome the appointment of a new Assistant Manager (sorry Sammy). Roy has been in place for over two weeks so it is suprising, given that we have just begun an intensive 10 day training camp, that we have not made more progress with Roy's 'Boot Room'.

Given the difference in profile between Liverpool and Fulham I strongly suspect that Roy will find he faces a lot more demands on his time than was previously the case. If he intends to introduce a new philosophy or tactical approach it is vitally important that he has a competent staff that he can trust. It is about time the Board gave him the support he needs and left negotiating the sale of our existing squad until such times as he has had an opportunity to properly assess the players...

Falls out with everyone him...

In truth Hammy the Pako suggestion was firmly tongue in cheek but we do need to get things sorted...

By all accounts Macia should be the first person to be culled and the sooner the better. It is going to be increasingly important that we get value for money / unearth a few hidden gems and frankly some of his alleged recommendations have been less than stellar.

I would like to see Borrell and McMahon remain in situ as they have both made a promising start and I don't have a clue what Roy's track record for developing players is like. Hopefully Kenny will also have a big role to play here too.

Hodgson: I want Sammy to stay - Liverpool FC

Roy Hodgson today confirmed he wants Sammy Lee to remain as part of his Anfield backroom team

The Liverpool boss, who is preparing his side for their first pre-season run-out against Al-Hilal this evening, hasn't yet finalised his coaching staff for the forthcoming campaign - but he insists the former Reds' midfielder will have a role to play.

"Sammy will stay here for the foreseeable future, absolutely - as long as he wants to be here," said the Liverpool manager.

"I have no intention of letting him go and if he wants to stay with us he is more than welcome.

"I haven't made decisions on any [other positions] yet."

Simply Red guitarist joins Liverpool FC backroom staff > Liverpool FC > Sport | Click Liverpool

Liverpool have enlisted the services of former Simply Red star Sylvan Richardson as the club's new masseur.

The guitarist was part of the legendary soul group's original line-up in 1985 but quit in two years later after becoming disillusioned with the music industry.

Richardson is currently in the Reds' Swiss pre-season training camp resort of Bad Ragaz after being installed as part of the club's new-look medical team.

Speaking to the club's official website, he revealed that he is enjoying the experience despite the ribbing he has received from his new colleagues about his time with the Manchester band.

"They have been giving me a lot of stick," he said.

"Especially Sammy Lee. I am a professional producer and musician but I was always interested in medicine, and when I left the band in 1987, that's the path I went down.

"To work for Liverpool is a great honour and when I got the call I was really excited.

"My role is to prepare the players and deal with their recovery after training. I am used to working with top athletes and so am very much looking forward to this opportunity."
