Hermes: I think I'm the only one to mention Owen's limitations on the thread, so that will make me 'how many people'. Believe me, I've been critical of him for at least the last two years. His performances didn't justify the favouritism shown towards him, I was convinced he was running down his contract and I considered him part of the problem - directly and indirectly - under the last 2 years of GH. And I thought you didn't want to talk about him anyway ;).

Our game now really suits a player who can poach/play on the shoulder - and that's Owen.

But is it? It certainly used to be. I watched in dismay as he failed to outpace Linvoy Primus last year. It's been well documented that he lost that lightning pace he had when he was 18, but when he's less than 100% fit, he's not especially quick at all compared with some of his peers, which makes those 'side issues' of not being able to control a ball or kick it particularly well with his weak foot into more significant deficiencies. He's not the same player who nipped inbetween Schmeichel and Pallister - either in terms of pace or nonchalant, clinical finishing.

Who would I sooner have? Well since you said 'realistically', that rules out Rooney, Henry, Shevchenko....Smith or Defoe could have been, young, hungry and cheap replacements who look capable of being prolific. Gudjonnson, Anelka, Kluivert or Larsson might have offered something different to what we have now. I could equally say 'no-one', because on his day, like you say, he's a finisher par excellence. Or should that be 'was'.

The signs seem to point to Mista in January - though I have to confess to knowing naff all about him. Owen might be hypothetical, but it's a good talking point - and it won't be going away any time soon.

With Baros/Cisse/Pongolle/Mellor why do we need another forward? Buying a 5th at high cost would only be prudent if we sold one or more of those already here. Quality not quantity is what improves a team, we're only allowed 11 on the pitch at any one time.

I'd still take Owen over any of those four. ( and I know we've got to give Cisse time). I don't think Mellor is good enough for Liverpool, and it doesn't look like Rafa rates Pongo that much.

Would I have Michael Owen back? An emphatic yes.

Looks you're not the only one:

Owen still of interest to Benitez

Sun 03 Oct, 10:05 AM - Teamtalk

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has hinted he may be interested in re-signing striker Michael Owen next summer.

Owen left Anfield for Real Madrid in an £8m deal in August but has so far failed to make an impression at the Spanish club.

Liverpool are believed to have reached agreement with Real that they can have first option on the 24-year-old should they decide to let him go.

Benitez said: "I think new Fifa rules say you cannot transfer the one player twice in the same season, so it is impossible to talk about the transfer window in January. We need to wait until the summer."

Benitez still believes Owen has the ability to make a success of his move to Spain.

The Spaniard said: "It's hard to establish yourself in a team like Real Madrid. But Michael has a positive mind and if he works properly only time will tell. He's a good professional and the only thing I can say to him is he must do the things he was doing here."

Gotta say I thought this thread was just idle fantasy, but now I'm wondering... think its probably like when you see that old girlfriend shortly after you've split up - shes looking a bit miserable and you remember all the good shags (but forget the rows when you were splitting up) - but the world moves on and so do the both of you.

No thanks. Not the player he was. Let us down for 2 years solid.

....maybe on a free, yes. And he can start paying for the honour of playing for us!

Maybe he's not the player he was but to say he let us down for two years is utter bollocks.

I'll give you that. We really should have been in for him when he left West Ham. What did he cost - 8m? A very good signing for Spurs.

You can keep Smith, though. We don't need another striker who doesn't score - we've only just got shut of Emily.
