I know everyone says Brendan needs to sort the defence out, and to a point I would agree that we do need to work tactically on how we defend, but what I think is even more important, is that our centre halves learn how to fucking head the ball clear!

The thing wrong with our team is the same thing it has been for a long time. The midfield needs sorting, badly. It needed sorting when people were posting up there was nothing wrong with our midfield and it needs sorting now. We also need a dominant centre back on the right side who can head, organise, yadda, yadda. We also need a big ol' goalie who can use his feet, command his area, AND save shots. I'm not talking about a bunch of grocks, I'm talking about quality footballers who also get the fundamentals. These issues have just been highlighted because we aren't in possession in the final third as much. At least meaningfully. With Suarez, Sturridge, Coutinho and Sterling, we had four players buzzing around the final third. Without Sturridge and Suarez, we have nobody. That four turns into none. We need a proper replacement for Suarez, and Balotelli isn't it.

 

So that's four players. Counterbalance that with selling some not so good ones. Or something. Anyway, it's the midfield that's our issue - and if Rodgers is guilt of not being able to set up anything, it's the midfield, not the defence.

Their third was a shambles. 3 players going for the same ball (Lolvren, skrtel and someone else) and all missing it.

 

If we'd conceded three goals like the first one, footballing genius, I'd be ok about losing to Real but the last two we could've given away against Stoke or Hull

But Rodgers has bought gazzilion defenders for spazilion money. How come is it not his fault this utter shite we are witnessing the past 2+ seasons. Who bought Mignolet and established him in our first 11 without even trying to prove himself or maintain him undroppable after embarrassing performances? Who's ruling out signing Valdes? Who has overlooked the need for a strong DM?

 

If FSG are responsible for all this, then Rodgers should make public this and either demand full control over transfers or resign, because at the moment they are ruining his career.

reading fergusons book he said when his defence, that included vidic and ferdinand in their pomp, was going through a bad time defending crosses he done a drill that involved 3 balls - one played wide left and crossed in, as soon as that was dead another ball was played right and sent in and the final ball was a high punt into the area for the back 4 and keeper to deal with. ok we could do better cutting out the cross at source but what happens when the cross goes into the danger area is comical. people running into each other, going for the same ball, hitting the ball off each other.

Agger was the best defender we had since Carra. He had a stop start season, his game suffered, and then he was let go for nothing. We spent 37m on Sakho and Lovren and yet we're far worse off.

The state our defence is in is bordering on a dereliction of duty from Rodgers and he needs to sort it out sooner rather than later as it will only lead to the exit door for him. I can accept vulnerability in open play, but our organisation at set pieces is at an unacceptable level (especially given the money spent, I've no doubt a properly drilled defence costing a fraction could do a better job). Coaching the defence is as much a part of his job as anything else, and if he can't do it he needs to bring in someone who can and fast.

We have defenders at the club who are capable of better, the blame lies firmly at Rodgers door.

I also wonder if he's surrounded himself with yes men because so far he doesn't seem to be learning from 12-18 month old mistakes.

Don't think it matters who we got in as a defensive coach the whole set up of the team is wrong....It's ok when you have a Suarez you can kinda get away with it but the minute he went then we should have looked into changing it.

No side should come close to winning a league letting in 50 goals to be honest and as wonderful as it was to watch it was always going to come back to bite us on the arse once you know who left.....

Keegan at Newcastle couldn't change even bringing in defensive coaches I just hope Roger's can....

He did nothing wrong there IMO

Agger was getting left for dead by not so quick players and didn't look the same player IMO. I don't think he was the future.

Sadly, Agger had blown up before the end of last season.  He'd gone as a top class defender.
