Us making the Milk Cup Final means that our game at home to Luton needs to be reaaranged. I feel this could be more important than maybe it looks. If we are going to be involved in a tight title race with the cheats, we need every little bit of things that can go our way to go our way, and every little advantage we can eek out will be needed/we need to make sure we don't allow ourselves to be disadvantaged at all. I am a big believer in pts on board being better than games in hand and falling a game behind and then who knows with how the games are scheduled across any weekend maybe 2 behind albeit for only a day or 2 and the 'scoreboard…

I know everyone's panicking/ not panicking/ about that big lump Andy Carroll, and it is an interesting and valid debate. But have we chatted much about Jordan Henderson? I think out of all our big recruits he was the one I simply couldn't work out; how good he is, where he should play, what his strengths are, was he worth the money. Did we need him? Of all of them, I had a feeling his start this season would be one that had more than a few people scratching their heads. Now obviously it's very early days, but I think I was bemused with good reason. It's obvious that Adam, Enrique and Downing are what they are: decent footballers who know how to play CM, LW and…

Alexis Mac Allister says he has grown into the holding midfield role as the season has progressed and is more than happy that it is playing a part in the success of the team. The Argentinian moved to Liverpool from Brighton where he was one of the creative architects of their top six finish in the league and reaching the semi-final of the FA Cup. With Liverpool’s midfield in desperate need of regeneration and some attacking impetus, it was thought the 25 year-old would play a big role in that. But after a failed bid to bring Mac Allister’s former teammate Moises Caicedo to the club and with Romeo Lavia also knocking back the chance to b…

Monday Jan 29: Virgil said something about not knowing what his future holds and it was turned into a much bigger deal than it should have been. I read his comments and thought it was more or less what you’d expect from a player in his mid 30s with only 18 months on his contract and not knowing who the manager was going to be next season. It was interpreted as him saying “I might leave if FSG don’t get the appointment right” but I took it as him saying he doesn’t know what’s going to happen because the club might not give him the contract he wants and the new manager might not want to commit that kind of money on a 35 year old. He’s right to say t…

Another one to add to the “was that our best performance of the season?” discussion. I’ve heard a lot of people say it is, I’m not sure though. Was it better than the Newcastle game? In fact, are Chelsea better than Newcastle? Probably not, beating Chelsea now isn’t the accomplishment it once was, that’s for sure. There’s a reason they’re 10th and we’re top. We’re miles better than them and it showed. We were at this one right from the start. You could tell after a couple of minutes it was probably going to be a comfortable win as long as we didn’t have to wait too long to make the breakthrough. Klopp hadn’t changed the team as much as I thought he…

A full round of fixtures in midweek, starting on Tuesday as Everton drew 0-0 at Fulham. Sounds like it was shit but I watched most of it on a stream and it was a good game with fuckloads of chances at both ends. No-one could score though. Pickford made some top saves and Beto missed two great chances right at the end. It’s wild to think that a club in desperate financial trouble that had been told not to spend any money, went out and spunked the best part of £40m on Beto and some kid from Sporting Lisbon who never even sees the field. It’s like having just enough money to pay your leccy bill and going down the shop and buying a couple of fidget spinners. …

Work-rate. Incisiveness. Nous. I don't ask for much. This is how it's gonna be. Build from the ground up. Note the kick-off time. This is the reverse fixture of the opening day of the season, and an opportunity to maintain the gap between ourselves and City. I say 'maintain' because they are at home to Burnley on the same night. Burnley are currently managed by a City old boy, and they are always as useless as Watford used to be against the cheats. Rather than sit in their own box for 90 minutes yet still get picked apart as they used to do under Dyche, they will be naïve and wide open, leaving gaps and getting picked apart. I don't see…

What a night at Anfield. The Reds found the net four times, Darwin found the woodwork four times, and Conor Bradley produced a performance for the ages as the title charge continued. Chris Smith is joined by Dan Thomas and TLW Editor Dave Usher to look back on one hell of a performance in which Bradley announced himself as a star of the present as well as the future, and Liverpool showed Todd Boehly that there's much more to building a great team than just spending more money than everyone else. The lads also look forward to the weekend's trip to Arsenal and answer some more of your questions. View full article

The Metropolitan Police have requested that the Carabao Cup Final between Liverpool and Chelsea on the 25th of February be moved forward to an earlier timeslot due from its current 4:30pm timeslot due to it sitting in the ‘high risk’ category. The two teams met in a couple of showcase finals two years ago with the Carabao Cup final kicking off at 4:30pm while the FA Cup final kicked off 15 minutes later. The Met released a statement (per the Echo) which outlined the process. “Preparations for the EFL Cup policing operation are underway following the conclusion of the two semi-finals and we are working with partners including…

I've heard a few people bemoaning the lack of Scousers in our squad. Until (unless?) Flanno gets well soon, we're a shower of OOTs, aren't we. I'm not convinced that it matters that much, to be honest - I like good, committed players, regardless of where they come from - but it got me thinking about the dearth of decent current Scouse players. Obviously there's Spudhead up the road and Leighton Baines next door, but beyond that how far do we have to go before we're scraping the Nolan and Barton barrel? How many current Scousers would actually improve our squad. NB - This is a thread about players, not managers!

Jurgen Klopp has gone out of his way to calm any fears that his exit from Liverpool will lead to a player exodus. The shock news that the German will end his tenure come the end of this season naturally saw its fair share of headlines, but along with that came some tenuous links that senior players may also be considering their future. None more so than captain Virgil Van Dijk who in the the aftermath of the announcement discussed how different the club landscape will look next season, and when the question was put to him whether he will be a mainstay of the future, he replied ‘ That’s a big question. I don’t know.” But the Dutchman cla…

The chase for the quadruple goes on as the Reds recorded a comfortable victory over Norwich on an emotional day at Anfield. TLW Editor Dave Usher is joined by Paul Natton, John Gallagher and John Brennan to reflect on a good afternoon for the Reds and to delve further into the news that Kloppo will be leaving at the end of the season. Well, five goals, the youngsters impressing and a successful start to a key part of the season. Can’t really ask for any more than that, given the emotional few days we’ve had. We’re in the hat for the 5th round and that was the order for today. Dan Thomas here with your Norwich report. It’s getting back on the horse having fallen from the saddle. It’s getting back on the bike after falling on your arse. It’s the first game since Klopp’s bombshell announcement and it’s out of the way. Even walking around the ground before the game the mood was quite sombre. There is usually excited chatter of people talking about the upcoming match, the tactics, tr…

This man is a genius. He's great at buying players. Since Rodgers left and he took over complete control (obviously coordinating with Klopp), we've bought Mane, Matip, Robertson, Ox, Salah, Keita, Fabinho and now Alisson. Even if you go looking for misses - and keep in mind, usually a manager/DOF who only misses on half his buys is doing OK - they're barely there? Karius, I guess? Manninger? It's pretty hard. For the most part, everyone he buys looks great (I'm assuming on the part of Keita, Fabinho and Alisson but come on - we all know they're going to be good). He's great at selling players. £10-12m for Danny Ward, a goalkeeper with one year in the Championship …

Work-rate. Incisiveness. Nous. I don't ask for much. This is how it's gonna be. Build from the ground up. 4th Round of the FA Cup then, in a game that is live on ITV if anyone wants to know. Early kick-off against a team managed by Jurgen's best mate David Wagner. For the past decade, Norwich have been a side that is strong in the Championship but out of their depth in the top flight. A yo-yo club by any definition, although last season ended in mid-table mediocrity rather than a bounce back to the Premier League. This season, they are just outside the play-off places so still well in contention. They must be hating that Ipswich have le…

Monday Jan 22: The kids beat Arsenal 7-1 in the youth cup at the weekend. I love the youth cup, always have, going right back to my playing days when I scored against United in this competition. The kids will be buzzing about this, especially as last season there was that well publicised u16 game when they conceded double figures against Arsenal in a game when we didn’t have a goalkeeper. Some of these lads will have played in that game and I reckon that will have been a motivating factor in giving them a spanking. In other news, Forest have written to PGMOL again. They’re unhappy because… *checks notes* Ivan Toney moved the ball eight inches to th…

Jurgen Klopp dropped a bombshell on us this morning with the news he was leaving at the end of the season, so we recorded this emergency podcast to try and make some sense of it all. TLW Editor Dave Usher is joined by Julian Richards and Stu Montagu, while there are drop ins from a couple of other lads as we discuss the whys, wherefores and what nexts. What started out as a serious, sombre discussion descended into chaos thanks to interruptions from cats, home smart speaker systems and the distraction of a Xabi Alonso press conference. ‘I will leave the Club at the end of the season’. The eleven worst words, to paraphrase Kenwright. Everyone’s shocked by this – especially given what Klopp has managed to build in the last few months. Bascombe wrote a piece in which he said almost flippantly (but no less true for that) that the players were essentially ‘too good, too soon’, and that’s why the manager felt he could leave now. Imagine Diaz’s goal had stood against Spurs?! He’d be gone already! Klopp has asked for the rest of the campaign not to be about him – good luck with that one, Jürgen! Everything will inevitably be couched in a ‘his last’ narrative. His last Title run-in. His l…
