The Burning Question: Where will we finish?

If we get off to a good start over the first few games then I think we could chase a CL spot but I doubt we'd finish above fifth. If we start badly them I reckon we'll struggle and end up contesting the 6th - 8th slots.

A man of the cloth hitting the crackpipe this early in the day? For shame, G.

Fair play for your positivity, mate.

He tipped us for third last season. With a similar margin of error we'll end up in 5th.

We're probably one of if not the most hated teams in the league. Of course people would attempt to denigrate it.

All the more reason to go out and win it. We shouldn't be playing for fourth as in previous years.

I dont think anyone at the club sets out for 4th at the beginning of the season. The reality is as the season develops, top spot becomes out of reach but you still got to aim as high as you can.

It doesnt mean you start the season aiming for that lesser position though.

So some are actually predicting how next season will turn out before we know our signings, let alone the ones made by others?

Utterly ridiculous.

I'll only put my prediction for next season in the correct thread, not this one. Fuck sake

I didn't remember that, cheers! I think third wasn't out of the question last season, but obviously a poor start under Rodgers, a managerial change, injuries up front, and then at the end prioritizing the cup, all led to 8th... but I maintain we coulda/shoulda/woulda!

It's a new season and a new manager.

I could easily be way off, but I think we'll surprise a few people next season. We will have balance in the team and they will be fighting for the shirt. They will be a lot better prepared for each league game too.

Why do you think we'll surprise a few people, you don't even know what players we'll buy?

Obviously just speculating, but here goes...

We have a world class manager who, for a period of about 16 games last season, had the current group of slackers playing at CL level. With no pre season and none of his own players, as well as injuries to contend with, in particular up front, we had some good displays that filled me with hope for the coming campaign. Some players improved, even with far less coaching than they will get next season, and others showed more fight than I had seen before. Even though we finished eighth last season it wasn't that far off top four, and we got to two cup finals too.

Looking ahead to next season we should have a better goalkeeper. I read some stats on here on another thread that said if Mignolet had performed even at an average level for a Premier League goalkeeper the points difference to us would probably have got us into the top four. Karius will need to settle but I'm very pleased with this signing and think he will do well for us. I think he was second highest rated goalkeeper in the Bundesliga, and as far as character is concerned, he's supposed to be a confident fella.

We've also strengthened at centre back. Matip is tall and fast and by all accounts a decent player. Lovren looks much better under Klopp, and presumably Sakho will get his issues sorted out and come back into the fold. We may strengthen further, but even as it stands we look stronger to me.

Moreno has been a bit of a liability at left back. He will either be replaced or will have much better competition to fend off. If we keep him I won't go overboard on the lad, as Klopp has shown he can improve players. With a preseason and some intensive coaching, maybe Klopp can get a tune out of him? But if not, we will have better than Brad Smith to fill the gap, with the links to Hector and Chilwell looking promising.

Origi looked a very useful player last season too. He put on some muscle and now holds the ball up really well and doesn't get bullied by anyone. The pace is there for all to see, and last season he was getting into a goal scoring groove. If he keeps that going this season he may well become our undisputed number one striker.

We need some pace on the flanks, and a goal scoring threat from out wide will be welcome. We don't have that yet, but with Klopp trying to sign Dembele, and now the whispers about Mane, you would have to think we will be in for this sort of player.

Midfield is still a bit of a conundrum, but I don't think we are finished there. Grujic might make his mark, but more likely he will be a bit part player in his first season. But you would have to think we are in for another midfielder - someone to control the game a bit more (we lost to Sevilla because we lost the midfield battle). Dahoud has been linked, but we'll have to wait and see.

Anyway, long post so far, but why am I optimistic for next season?

- Klopp. He will shape his team with signings, in and out, and have them for preseason

- During the season we will be able to concentrate on the league

- Thus far we look to have improved at goalkeeper and central defence

- We won't be as short up front next season as this last one

- I expect us to improve at left back

- I expect us to buy a goal scoring winger

- I expect us to strengthen further in midfield

Granted, the last three are yet to happen, but even before they do, we are already looking much better for next season. I'm sticking my neck out a bit here because I know the world class managers that are in the league and the money they will probably spend to strengthen their sides.

It's going to be a great season and I can't wait for it to begin again. We are nowhere near favourites to win the league (at a guess I would say the bookmakers will have us as sixth). But I'm not a bookmaker, and as a Liverpool fan I am predicting we are going to be...

Champions.

4th to 6th. Depending on consistency.

If Klopp can get the good Liverpool showing up week in week out, Then I think 4th.

However, I don't think he's a miracle worker, and it's still going to take time for him to buy in and / or improve the players he has.

I think Liverpool will see the real improvements after a full season in charge with the signings he's chosen.
