I think if we are all being honest - it was a case of when, not if Barcelona came in for him - especially as he was improving. The timing is a cunt, but you can't control that.

If he stays, he'll be ace because that seems to be the type of guy he is. However, unlike Gerrard and Suarez who had approximately one bad game every six months, Cout's has one bad game every four, and the odd period where he looks half-arsed. Looking forward to those times this season - analysis, interpretation, ITK's!

If this plays out the way I think - we will end up with a player who does not want to be here for the next season and sell him next summer for half of what we could get now.

MONEYBALL!!!

I'm no fan of FSG but I'd expect transfer fees to be even more fucked up next summer.

He goes nowhere this year.

I think on average his level isn't that much higher than Lallana with the caveat being his average is close to Lallanas best whilst Coutinhos best is world class and game changing. I fully expect Coutinho to have a much better good to bad game ratio at Barcelona mind.

I'd think from Barcelonas perspective buying Dembele this season means that if they can't get FSG to sell Coutinho it's not the end of the world as Iniesta is still good enough to hold his place. It also gives us an extra year to aggressively monitor potential replacements and piss off their clubs before trying to sign a Southampton player.

Agreed.

Also, you don't have to be a fan of FSG to recognise that they don't often issue statements about players, but when they do, they mean it. You don't get to be a capitalist-bastard billionaire with a foxy wife if you're the kind of weed who swoons like a Southern belle having an attack of the vapours at the first sign of a transfer request.

Requests can be refused.

I don't buy that transfers will be even more fucked up next season, unless you can predict even bigger vanity spending from the fossil fuel states -- that's an unknown that can't be predicted with certainty. On the other hand, bubbles burst, that's what they do. If you look closely at the spending of this window, the big spenders are: MC (oil), PSG (natural gas), MU, and Milan (with borrowed money from vulture hedge fund). Of those, only MU spent the money they could recoup (sustainable spending). Chinese money had been shut down, not permanently but at least until their looming financial crisis over bad debts eases. Milan are in extremely risky situation, their commercial arms are expected to perform miracles to pay back the debts .

Liverpool are in a peculiar lose-lose situation in which losing Coutinho would very likely ruin another season, even £130 mils won't compensate for the time and progress lost. But retaining a distrusted Coutinho doesn't assure the season won't be ruined either. It's pick your poison and live with it.

I think I understand what Klopp was saying on Saturday now after reading his Hoffenheim press conference quotes. I think it was aimed at Coutinho. He's basically saying the owners have the final say (which is obviously the case but not in the manner a lot of people are flapping about on here) and they're saying you're not going anywhere so it's pointless isolating yourself.

I think Coutinho has obviously dug out Klopp a bit with those 'leaked' comments and it was aimed at causing some friction between them so that Klopp would want him out. Klopp obviously doesn't want the friction and wants to be able to use him this season so is sort of "blaming" the stance of his non-sale on the owners so that he doesn't continue with this behaviour.

Although the owners have the final say I personally I think if Klopp went to them and said I want him gone they would sell. Klopp is playing the game a bit by saying that is not the case.

You'd be ace on 3-2-1, no chance you're winning Dusty Bin.

Pretty much how I see it. You're obviously an FSG shill as well!

Loved the 'flapping about' bit.

I hope Coutinho stays, it's too late to be fucking around with this, but next season he can go.

On a side note, I think he'll fail at Barcelona.

He won't get near a free-kick, so that's half his goals gone.  Even Suarez can't get near a free-kick while Messi demands them all.

So what are they paying £130m for?  Occassional worldie, an assist every other game? It's great stuff, but it's not worth paying the 2nd highest transfer fee of all time for, and he'll get destroyed under that spotlight.  He's not a replacement for Neymar, not even close.  Try telling their fans that though once they pay over £100m for him, having just brought in Paulinho for £35m as well.  The shitness of Paulinho to win games means that Coutinho will have even more of a spotlight on him to win games.

Personally, it's all about systems.  If we play 433 then he doesn't fit in unless he's played in the midfield 3.  I don't think he seems to want to play there, I think he prefers the license to stay in attack.  This could be the source of the reported 'tension' between him and Klopp, IF there's any substance to it at all.

I agree he wont get much of a look in at barcelona. So fucking what is all I can say. He could have been a legend here and moved on in another 2 or 3 years with most people's blessing if we'd have won the title or showed we were just going to be like arsenal.

But, he can fuck off now as far as Im concerned. He doesnt want to be here so fuck off, sit on the barcelona bench, draw less money and have an indifferent fan base give you the occasional ole.

I'll look forward to this post being repeated next year when Mane is at either of the big 2,that's the way we roll.

It's the Daily Mirror so.....

Philippe Coutinho is refusing to change his stance over a move away from Liverpool - even if it costs him his place at the World Cup. The Brazilian wants to quit Anfield to secure a blockbuster switch to Barcelona after Liverpool rejected two bids for his services.

Last week, the Reds issued a statement insisting Coutinho would not be departing but the player has handed in a transfer request in a bid to force through the move. Reports suggest Coutinho, who is currently sidelined with a back problem, has even told Klopp he will  never play for the club again. And now it is suggested he is so intent on leaving the club, Coutinho is even willing to risk his place in Brazil's squad for next summer.

Mundo Deportivo reports Coutinho is ready to sit in the stands for the remainder of the season if the club do not agree to his departure. The 25-year-old is desperate to move to the Nou Camp as Ernesto Valverde looks to bring in reinforcements.

Coutinho believe he has acted professionally throughout the summer and after initially going through the necessary means of handing in a formal transfer request, he will now look to force the move.

So this is how it feels to be a Southampton fan.
