I was thinking the same. I can't remember seeing a test opener look this solid in his first few games for a long, long time.

You can’t ‘make’ a keeper. It’s the most difficult job in cricket and to deny that is bollocks.  I know circumstances have meant we couldn’t pick the best one but pick the next best one, not someone who can do it better than all the other non-keepers.

The obsession with the Ashes from 18 months out has been a massive mistake. Surely you worry about the immediate games and hopefully solutions appear as you go along. The set up doesn't help either as I was reading that before the India series there are only 2 sets of 4 day county games to help anyone struggling to find form. The last four tests suggest massive issues but if we play our best side and covid regulations subside , we have the bones of a good team.We could desperately do with Ali finding form as he balances the side for me . Definites for India first tesr ?

There was an article in the Guardian criticising the strategy too. As well as being misguided and looking like it hasn't worked well, it's massively disrespectful to the teams we've been playing and the paying spectators.

Especially as the two teams we are playing are rated one and two in the world.
