Some of the stats guys on here would enjoy Atherton’s lunchtime interview with England’s analysis guru.

I could do with subtitles.

The batting first stuff was interesting.

England are about half as good without Stokes. They miss every aspect of his game when he’s not there. Stokes, Root and Anderson are our only world class players.

I was looking at the batting averages in test cricket earlier. Root 49, Stokes 37, no-one else above 34. Even Burns who has established himself. In fact the bowling all rounders like Woakes, Curran, Ali etc all averaged about 25 - 28 and haven't been producing significantly less than the the top order minus Root and Stokes.

I thought of Bairstow's moaning over the last couple of years. You've played 74 tests and average 34. You'd have been fucked off out of the Zimbabwe side by now.

Early days for Lawrence, Crawley, Pope, and Sibley obviously, but it's quite the gamble to stick them all in the team at the same time. Huge pressure on Root and Stokes.

Maybe just a shade

Said yesterday, we can't expect to just chuck in four or five inexperienced batsmen at the same time and expect to be able to cope with one of the top two sides in the world. India next, then Australia away. Could be a fucking dismal year.

We have Root and Stokes, and maybe Burns, who are currently good enough to be in the top six or seven for England in test cricket.

...and they're missing their best bowler.

Yes and boy is it showing. We seem clueless without Stokes, we’re not a good side.
