Someone mentioned them on that thread 'which shall not be spoken of', basically the rude ones popping up when you don't want them to and at completely unpredictable times.

Now as I don't expect to get any kind of consensus about people not using explicit ones (surprise surprise), can anyone tell me if there's any way to disable them?

There's going to be some changes in terms of avatars, but it won't happen until some time this week. I'll explain it in more detail soon.

It is now, I just picked up my monitor and moved it from side to side, it instantly makes everybody's avatar a gif, genius.

Actually, I think that's just for when you're logged in.

I'm not really arsed when I am at home, but in work, when I don't log in, it's a bit unsavoury.
