Shutter Island - If they'd cut the 30 minutes in the middle it would be a good film. Also why all the green screening around the ocean? Can't they film outdoors anymore? Das Boot didnt have a problem with it.

One thing I must say is I thought Leonard was pretty good. He's only playing himself as ever but it was a good performance, I almost warmed to him.

6/10. It would have only been a 5 but no film with Von Sydow can be a 5. In fact it was a very good cast. I've always had a thing for Emily Mortimer.

Terminator Salvation. 6/10. Could have been so much better. Seemed as if the John Connor character played second fiddle thoughout the film when he should of been the pivotal role. Rumours that Bale had a say in what scenes where being cut makes sense as it seemed a bit mish mash in places.

Star Trek. 7.5/10. Never really been into Star Trek so approached this as a "there's fuck all else on so i'll watch this" type of film but i have to say it was pretty good. Brave move in casting a relative unknown as Kirk but it paid off plus the dude from Heroes was great as Spock. Set up nicely for at least another outing.

Kickass. Really enjoyed it, nothing like what I expected. I liked the way the parody worked with the criminal mastermind bad guy, as there would be in a batman or similar movie. Slightly surprised it had such a big mainstream launch as it had the feel of an indie movie.

Good, funny, enjoyable. 7.7/10.

Mesrine - 8/10 for the whole thing. Thought the second part was the superior film. Totally gripping throughout and brilliantly played by everyone. Also, the bird who plays his last wife, Sylvia, is: Out. Of. This. World.

Fit.

Four Lions - 8.5/10. Pissed myself through most of it, but the last fifteen minutes or so were incredibly bleak. The Fonejacker was hysterical.

"We've got women talking back and people playing stringed instruments!"

30 days of night: dark days - If you're going to do a film based on a trio of books with a decent story and make a damn good effort with the first film don't ruin by making some shit straight to dVd sequel.

The vamps in the sequel were nowhere near as scary as the first films alien like squeeling mother fuckers and seemed to have lost all the speed and strength they had .

4 out of 10

Karate Kid - The original one. 8 cranes out of 10. Brilliant even all of these years later. The chemistry between Miyagi and Larusso shines throughout ably assisted by Elisabeth Shue.

It's on Watch+1 now.

The remake hangs together more coherently as a film with some scenes much tighter and technically better than the original (even though it's kung fu rather than karate) but the original wins out because it has Elisabeth Shue and the ending is better.

Planet Terror. 2/10. Fucking pretentious shit. I know the idea behind this and Death Proof was part of their love of Grindhouse but Rodriguez and Tarantino can do one after this. Just nonsense all the way through. In reality I watched this hoping for a Rose McGowan and Marley Shelton lezz off; big let down.

But you get Rose McGowan with a gun instead of a leg. A gun!!

L.A. Confidential

9/10

Quality stuff. I loved the feel of the film, the performances, the story, the characterisation and the directing. Just brilliant. £4 well spent.

As an aside, could anybody recommend me a decent place to start with Ellroy's books? I've heard his style is pretty difficult to get to grips with, so if anybody could let me know the names of a few of his more accessible titles as a starting point it would be a great help.

I read The Black Dhalia years before the film, The Blue Dhalia came out, and found it a really intriguing, easy read. Full of atmosphere and noir styling.

Enjoyed it very much.

The Guardian 6/10

Pretty standard and very predictable. We called the ending in the first 20mins (not that we were expecting a complex movie or anything). Would have not bothered if it hadn't of been for the inclusion of Kevin Costner.

Not got much else to say about it if I'm honest. Wasn't the worst film to settle on the sofa with a plate full of Sunday Roast, mind.

Off to watch Black Death in a minute as I've got the day off tomorrow and intend having a fat lie in. Medieval Britain with plague, sword fighting and Sean Bean. What could possibly be poor about that? I'm thinking Borimir albeit fighting the clap as opposed to Orcs.

Monsters (2010) - Six years ago NASA discovered the possibility of alien life within our solar system. A probe was launched to collect samples, but crashed upon re-entry over Central America. Soon after, new life form began to appear and half of Mexico was quarantined as an INFECTED ZONE. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain "the creatures".

The story centres around a journalist who agrees to escort a women back to the US Border, not bad, bit of 'The Road' about it but it's also been described as “like Lost in Translation, set in Mexico, but with gigantic alien monsters.”.

Was going to give it 7/10 but then found out it cost just $15,000 to make so has to get an 8 or 9 out of ten for that alone.

Frozen - Iceman from X-Men forgets he's Iceman and freezes on a shutdown ski lift. Pretty good all in and the feeding time scene is pretty horrific (more so since you see nothing but can here it). 7/10
