The Girl who played with Fire - 6/10 I enjoyed the first film but this one is very much a film of a book - lots omitted that in my opinion made the book such a page turner. If I hadn't read the book I think I would be left wondering why it was necessary to introduce characters and then make no further reference to them.

The Illusionist - 6/10. The same bloke who did Belleville Rendez-Vous, so perhaps I am being harsh because I was hoping for a film that was as good. The animation is outstanding, and I enjoyed the score. The problem is "The film will be based on an unproduced script by Jacques Tati" - I suspect it was unproduced for a sound reason, and I'm not a huge Tati fan. However, if you like your films wistful and melancholic then you'll probably enjoy this more than I did.

Combine a Jim Thompson novel, Direction by Michael Winterbottom and a cast including Casey Affleck, Kate Hudson and Jessica Alba...sounds like it might have possibilities eh?

'The Killer Inside Me' follows the dark, malevolent misdeeds of a small-town, Texas Deputy Sheriff and is certainly not for the faint of heart. If you combined 'The Last Picture Show' with 'Blood Simple' and 'The Grifters' you would have a starting point. It looks fantastic and beautifully 'captures' the time and place but leaves you feeling as though you have been repeatedly dry-bummed in the soul.

This won't be everyone's cup of tea as it is particularly nasty, murderous and misogynistic piece of work.

A special mention for an outstanding soundtrack.

8.5 notches on the gun for me.

Maybe seeing it on the big screen made a difference.

THE SOCIAL NETWORK the new movie about the history of Facebook. It was excellent. A surprisingly interesting tale of modern "history" in the making. Go see it. 9/10

Buried. The Ryan Reynolds movie of a man who was kidnapped and woke up in a coffin. The entire movie is simply Ryan Reynolds in a coffin. Stunning movie. 9/10

Two nine out of tens in one go? Boy you hit paydirt right there.

Triangle - If you want to be confused, then more confused, then slightly annoyed, then intrigued, then confused again, then slightly annoyed again, then watch this.

Then, when it's over be prepared to be annoyed, then intrigued, then confused, then read up some theories about it and prepare to want to watch it all over again.

Maybe that's just me though - you might think its shite. But if you like a mind-bending horror/thriller, I'd recommend this.

Centurion - 8/10

Group of romans get stuck behind enemy lines. That's about the jist of it. Pretty good if you like your sword films.

Not sure if I mentioned it before either but black death is well worth a watch.

Enjoyed both of those. Cracking films.

Best thread on the GF, this.

Watched this a few weeks ago; not one to watch when you've had a few. Quite hard to follow all the twists but does leave your brain thinking afterwards.

The New World-

Terrence Mallick at his lyrical best, loses a little steam in the middle, but jawdropping visuals and fantastic performances (yeah so what I think Colin Farrel is a good actor, but mostly the Pocahantas girl) make this a moving, worthwhile experience

Almost ashamed to say that the first time i saw The Night Of The Hunter was 2 days ago. Bought the DVD but have been meaning to watch it for 12 years. Lots of very very wooden acting but some brilliant scenes and compelling photography in parts. Worth sitting through the dodgy bits to glimpse the beautiful parts. Oh, and Mitchum, fucking, of course, rules. Will definitely be re-watching it. 8.5/10.

Great film...and all these years on - 60 years old ? - it is even pehaps more unsettling and topical.

The nonce is coming to get yer...
