Emeli Sandé at the Olympic opening ceremony was just devastating.

 

It's also ace done with the pipes and drums of the Scots mass bands.

When you think about it there are absolutely thousands of sad songs each person knows, some songs just hit others in a different way. Maybe's down to sad but also happy memories. 

 

Currently listening to a rendition of 'Shenandoah' by 'Richard Thompson' and it makes me feel sad, never thought I#d put that in a sentence.

I went to see Elton John in Birmingham in 1989 on the day before the FA Cup Final. It was a good fun gig, with a few laughs between him and the audience. At the final encore he just said "There's a football match tomorrow". [Cheers from the audience.]

"This is for those who can't be there."

 

So understated and poignant and all the more powerful as a result.
